PSA: regarding the old New Hope & Ivyland steam locomotive outside Doylestown, PA

The old "Niagara" steam locomotive previously located at the now-defunct and highly visible Buckingham, PA station halfway between Doylestown and New Hope has officially and finally been moved to the New Hope rail station for complete restoration. If you don't know what I'm talking about: http://i.imgur.com/2X5QApW.jpg. (Look at the size of that thing!)

I went today for the first time, expecting to take some awesome shots of the locomotive in the fall colors, but was disappointed to learn it's definitely no longer there, and I walked the tracks for quite awhile to verify. The area is still owned by the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad, though, and there are still some old, open passenger cars and coal carriers, but nothing as exciting as that locomotive.

I also had the great experience of being present for a running, tourist train to pass within 15 feet of me as I hid behind the old cars taking photos. That was cool. Then the stereotypical rear-car-conductor saw me. I waved. He didn't. I left shortly thereafter.

I'm still working out photo albums of different sizes of today's photos, so maybe I'll edit this once I have a few acceptable ones. I just wanted to get a PSA out before I forgot. If you got to see it, awesome! I'm jealous. If not, me too, man, me too...

How long did you have to walk the tracks to verify that the massive locomotive was indeed not there?

As far as I can remember, there has never been a locomotive on this siding or anywhere near it; the one you linked to has always been sitting in New Hope, usually on the dead line. The only cars that have been sitting here for the past decade have been a line of ex-LIRR P72 passenger coaches, a few random freight cars and an ex-Reading Blueliner, which was last used as the cab car for SEPTA's wire train (which has a tendency to move about from time to time).

I was thinking the same thing, Byberrian Fanman. That locomotive has been sitting in the yard in back of the station in New Hope since for at least 26 years. It used to be parked in the middle of a bunch of busted cars, not on the end. I remember having a picnic on the tracks next to it with a couple of Deadhead friends (we were tripping-face) back in 1987 after visiting the legendary Now & Then shop. Back then, the store was a combination 60's revival shop with posters, clothing, bootleg records etc. It was also a giant head-shop (before New Hope was all touristy).
At the time the station was closed due to track renovations on the Swamp Road bridge. If it wasn't that exact locomotive, it was one very similar. I remember the front was missing then too.
Byberrian Fanman, a while back you had some information about one (or more) of the vintage passenger cars here being restored. I don't see them so I imagine they've been completed?

This is one of the two red ones.

There was also an ancient wooden boxcar that was literally rotting as it sat. I don't see that one either, nor the old blue passenger car that was parked behind it.

The last time I was there they were still working on restoring the old Wycombe train station. Has that been completed as well?

I walked as far as around the corner past the golf course, to where I could see the next street/rail intersection.

Wow, okay. That's crazy. I had received several tips that the locomotive was there. In that case, if it is the case, my apologies. Still, it sucks. It would have been a great location to visit it.

There was one open-air car which may have been sitting between the last two CNJ cars in your shot.. that one has been restored.

As for Wycombe station, that too has been restored to its former glory. I don't believe it's currently serviced by any tourist trains, but it certainly has the potential.

As for the ex-Reading Blueliner EMU I mentioned, I don't know what the hell NH&I plans on doing with it. It's been sitting in Buckingham since early 2005 and disappears every once in a while (to where, I'm not sure yet). Rumor has it that it will be used as a cab car, so long-distance tourist trains will only need to use one locomotive instead of two on each end.

Is this the Blueliner in question? It has great lines. I hope it's not too far gone for restoration.

Oh wow, that's a beautiful car. That wasn't there the day I did my shooting, nor the last two times I drove over the crossing next to the post office since then.

Yeah, that one is usually sitting in Buckingham along with the ex-LIRR cars.

I just noticed the window cages. In my experience, every time I saw a SEPTA car with cages, it was the rail-maintenance crew and was full of huge guys and heavy industrial tools, welders, etc. Have you ever seen the inside? Are the bench seats all taken out?

I've never seen the inside of this car, as it has always been chained shut (probably for good reason), but I already know it's been gutted and filled with maintenance-related things. Like I said, it was last used as a part of SEPTA's wire maintenance train.

9 is good. A few of your pictures are tilted, btw.
I'm so upset I lived right by these and never went by to check them out. The only abandoned trains I know of are on the tracks that go by the lehigh river. They're not as cool as these, though. I had a picnic once on the top of one. Are they still there?

I know, it really bothered me at the time, until I bothered to take my face away from my camera to look around. It's actually the landscape of the place. The rails, if they hadn't been set on level ground, have since warped to the landscape.

I don't have any idea which Lehigh River tracks you mean. Which? And don't be upset; these aren't exactly nearby Stroudsburg.

they go through sand island westward, walk for 20 minutes and you'll see the trains on your right.

What a shame. I shot a really shitty video for a film and video class in those cars when I first began college.
