Nice set. I was over by the (high) school the other day, but the cops showed up right as I pulled up so I decided to leave. After seeing all these photo's of it recently I wish I waited them out.

5 is incredible! I don't know what I'm looking at, but it makes me excited and sad at the same time.

Thank You it was a tunnel that was next to a train tunnel. May have been a old train station. I am going to research it

Out of all the times I've been to the train tunnel in 2 & 5, I've NEVER seen a train come through. I've spent hours there, multiple times and even went through the active tube to the end. I'm now realizing that might not have been the best idea I've had, lol!

Esselmont, that's the abandoned train tunnel next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (the Rocky steps).

I'm wondering why the fascination with the school? It's certainly not abandoned and it was just closed last summer when the dwindling student body moved to a school half it's size, nearby. This is the first year it hasn't held classes since the second decade of the 1900's. The city has it up for sale.

It's actually not that bad of an idea. The tunnel was originally double-tracked, it was reduced to a centralized single track in order to increase vertical clearance quite sometime ago; therefore, not only do you have a lot of space along both sides of the track, you also have the nice deep cubbyholes in the walls to hide in. Also, the speed limit is only 15 mph, so it isn't like you wouldn't have any time to react.

I am not from the area, so I do not know the history. The school was cool. Just something different. I was taken around by a friend out there that knows some spots and on my way out of town, we stopped at the school. I would love to come back and explore more of such a great city

I did not think I would be lucky enough, but within 10 minutes we heard the train coming. It was slow moving, probably 15mph but it was a loooong train.

Dude, it was fuckin' KILLER! I would've laid waste to my bikini-briefs though if I was in there and a train came. It may have been originally constructed for two trains but Goddamn bro, what a tight squeeze!

That picture isn't part of the PA Ave Tunnel, it's a 6 track tunnel. Unless that's some sort of off part of the active side used by CSX

Do-able for sure but seems fairly risky in terms of getting spotted.

PD, the photo is from the end of the right-hand, active CSX (formerly the B&O) train tube next to the abandoned, trackless, 6-track Reading tunnel on the left. It's one single track. It begins at the point the poured cement part of the wide tunnel turns into the hewn block and red brick arch construction.
We all know the wide, trackless tunnel dead-ends at the 9th District Police Station parking lot at 21st street.

Sorry for this shitty photo, it was just a snap. It was overcast and raining and the darkness at this junction was complete.

Here's the exit of that tunnel at the other end along the Schuylkill Banks Trail near Eakins Oval. This is where I took the photo in dispute.

On retrospect, it probably would've been smarter to park near the exit and take those photos instead of going through the tunnel. Now knowing the train only travels 15 miles per hour and the tunnel was designed for two set of tracks gives me the peace of mind that if a train did come, I may not have died. Before traveling the tunnel, I had no idea where it led. If you can get a time table for the train that DOES use this, you could probably take some amazing photos with a real camera, tripod and your lighting skills. It's dead-black for most of the tunnel. The tunnels 1920's construction though is amazing and extremely photogenic. There were some sleeping crackheads on the bridge above the 1921 stone though, so bring someone with you.

Sounds like a fun weekend. Even now I still don't think I'd risk it, with my luck I'd either trip and fall in front of a train or it'd derail and smash me or something.
