| | | Posted by INeedAttention.com You know, the tought of a wireless audio transmitter (a bug) dropped somewhere in a location is something that I've pondered before. Not too long ago, I was approached by a gentleman looking to buy the Pines Hotel in Fallsburg, NY (in the LDB, check it out). The man was an engineer, and I am a studying engineer at Rensselaer Polytech. He offered me a job if he were to buy the building, supervising the building's remediation. Of course, as you can tell from the state of the building, the entire deal fell through and I never got the job. Where am I going with all of this? I was thinking that if I were to have a job at the hotel, and it were to be in a pseudoabandoned state that would still be inviting the explorer, that I would wire subtle cameras as smoke detectors and such. I would never live down the thrill of following an explorer via camera as I remotely turned on/off lights or activated a fire alarm bell. Hell, even if I didn't work at a location, it would be nifty to install a wireless video transmitter (a-la X10) to spy on the location any time I desired. Couldn't you just picture it? I could pull up in front of the building with a wireless video receiver and be all like, "Alpha team, there is a bogey headed southbound on the 3rd floor corridor in the Essex building," over my 2-way radio. Too fun to think about!

The idea is great. The technical problems make it impractical. Audio is easy -- just rig a cheap FRS radio to a deep-cycle 6V gel battery and set it for VOX. Hide it well and you're in business for a week or more. You can just drop by and replace the battery with one that you've recharged. Transmitting audio back to the building, or sending remote control signals to trigger lights, alarms, pop-up skeletons and the like, is easy, but the adventurers may just take your toys and leave. Doh! Video would be a bitch. The micro-cams can only transmit about 300 feet in an open field. In a buidling, the signal may be completely trapped or it will have severely limited range so you'd have to boost the signal (a lot). To boost the signal would be expensive and illegal. ($25,000 fine, five years, and confiscation of equipment) Sorry to bear bad tidings... It would be cool. On the other hand, one of those new modulated ultrasound audio systems would be amazing! No way to tell where it's coming from (it can be hundreds of feet away!) and absolutely perfect hi-fidelity reproduction... An instantaneous haunting!
