Crews knock down fire at abandoned school building

Not sure if anyone got in here but it seems it's too late now.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate a multiple-alarm fire in an abandoned school.

Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, Hamilton fire crews responded at the former St. Christopher's Catholic elementary school on Greenhill Avenue.

When they arrived, smoke was billowing out and firefighters going in through the front door discovered a fully involved blaze.

They managed to knock it down in short order, and there were no injuries.

There was nothing inside the building and the fire damage is estimated at $1,000

"the fire damage is estimated at $1,000"
lol it must have been a pretty small fire. You probably couldnt re-paint a single classroom, let alone replace more than 1 or 2 windows for much less than $1000.

You're right, the damage estimate # doesn't match the "fully involved" and "billowing" language. I googled a bit to see if other media were reporting different numbers, but didn't find any.

Did find a rubbish fire had been set in one of the classrooms in September. 2 fires in 4 months in a building that was in use 3 years ago. Does this seem oddly frequent to anyone else?

Most abandoned buildings are considered financial write-offs, which is the reason the value is so low. The $1000 is most likely an administrative number for insurance purposes to pay for any expenses incurred with 911 calls or any security measures required by the city to prevent intruders (such as cost to board up windows).

True, but in this case the Hamilton Wentworth Separate School board owns and maintains that school. It wasn't abandoned, just not in use, waiting for demolition anyway.

I saw that place a few times whilst biking by on my way to the Kenilworth stairs but never checked it out. Too many houses on the opposing side made me shy away. Looks like it's gonna be a lot harder now.

/flail it til ya nail it

I had a key and alarm code at one time when I went to remove furniture from there LOL
