| | Infiltration enthusiast posts here for 1st time :) < on 5/9/2003 8:56 AM >
| | | Hi all - wonderful site. I belong to another online "infiltration and exploration" forum of sorts and very recently came across this jewel. Glad to be here. Much of my "recon" fun in the last twenty years has taken place near types of venues already familiar to you: abandoned lots and buildings, hotels and in one case, the outdoor grounds of an occupied and fully active Hells Angels safehouse (heh heh - proud of that one). I'm 34 now, and pretty careful how I behave - preferring to explore safe areas instead. Anyhow, here are a few tips I've used over the years to help me in my explorations. First of all, I very rarely visited a place "cold turkey" (except for the Hells Angels place). I know this takes the fun somewhat out of it, but I dislike confrontations to begin with and prefer avoiding them altogether. Thus, at least two weeks of observations and distant visits used to go into my forays. Amongst other things, I never went into a place without trying to figure out where the exits were beforehand. 2) Leaving 2 or 3 old, weathered coins along the center of suspected patrol routes to check if patrols present and frequency: security guard wages being what they are, it's hard for the average patrol guard to resist pocketing any money he/she finds along a route or at the very least, disturbing it from its original spot. Never use shiny coins as it gives little furry critters a reason to come along and carry them off. It also tells security forces that trespassers have recently been in the area and surveillance needs to be stepped up. Soaking them with urine seems to help in regards to animals. Check often and from a distance and never stop to look at the coin as you may be watched. Instead, casually walk by. 3) the old "Bond" trick of placing a wetted strand of hair along door seams or across locks: whether the door is opened or a key is inserted, this is a surefire way of finding out if anyone is visiting your target venue. Brunette hair strands are slightly less perceptible than blonde ones on most surfaces because of light refraction. Black ones are highly visible. 4) To find out if the patrol guards are accompagnied by dogs or not, get some sand or dirt and sprinkle it generously around narrow passageways indoors/outdoors. Don't use too much - besides all you need is a tip of a print or a pad to know. A handful is more than enough - spread out over a two foot area. Obviously don't use this tactic in luxury venues. Another tactic to ensure that the dog(s) step into the sand is to sprinkle beef jerky pieces in and around the sand. Obviously, look for scats as well. Many times security guards "scoop the poop" so watch for smears. 5) If you're a guy, wear some ordinary nonprescription glasses upon mission day. It's a relatively unintrusive natural disguise and can be removed quickly in case you need to escape quickly and make your way to a safe zone. It's quite difficult for most people (even trained professionals) to accurately recall someone's facial features when they're wearing glasses and/or facial hair. Try to wear a double set of shirts: one light and highly visible, the other one subdued and drab. If you're spotted, you can remove the first layer, toss it into a river or down a cliff, garbage can or whatever, ditch the glasses, and be relatively sure you won't be suspected - especially if by that time you're in a well travelled and public area. Well, that's about it. I'm glad I found this place, and I look forward to reading about other member's adventures

| | | No, it's called TTLG, and it's dedicated for the most part to stealth/thieving sims such as Thief and Deus Ex. I told my fellow members about you guys and this site, and the majority of them thought it was very cool. You're bookmarked in more than one of their web browsers. BTW, how long has this site been operational?

| | | "What is the address of this other forum, Nethawk? " Just go to www.ttlg.com guys. Sign up - most everyone in there is very friendly and a ultrahardcore stealth/sneaking enthusiast (in cyberspace in relation to playing Thief), although more than a few have real world experiences like yourselves. I come here every night now, 'cuz I simply can't believe that an entire community of guys and gals such as yourselves exist. I always did my roaming alone, so it's nice to know I wasn't a freak. BTW, don't know if I'm breaking a forum rule here (forgive me if I am), but the first teaser trailer for our beloved Thief III has just come out. Eidos has it at their site. You can view it right here: http://www.eidosinteractive.com/downloads/search.html?gmid=141 [last edit 5/9/2003 11:43 PM by Nethawk - edited 1 times]

I LOVE YOU! Thief is quite possibly one of the greatest PC games ever made, and I've been looking forward to Thief III for as long as I can remember. Thanks for the link, TIII looks like it is going to absolutely 0wn. It had best come out on the PC first
