| | | Strange Building on Adelaide in Toronto < on 7/3/2005 3:15 PM >
| | | Just remembered a building I see everyday on my way too and from work. On Adelaide you see a large concrete structure with a huge ad on it, across from a big office building. Seems to be an entrance to underground parking. From Richmond you can see the other side, which appears to be a concrete shell with window holes and not much else. Anyone know what I am talking about and possibly more about the building?

| | | If it is what I think it is, that building is the shell of a failed project. There is parking under it but when construction was underway, the developer ran out of money and all work stopped. I was in the Toronto Dominion Centre during Doors Open 2005 and the tour guide told us about this.

| | | It's the Bay-Adelaide Centre. It was to be built in the early 90's but then was stopped due to a lack of funds. They're constantly proposing "new" buildings for "The Stump" but have yet to actually act on any of them.

| | | I believe Trizechahn owns the property, and has an approved building for it. It'll be interesting to see if anyone actually does anything with it. Trump's new building is going up to the south of it as well.

| | | Pretty much what I thought, looked like an unfinished project. Wonder if it is worth going in, or just an empty concrete shell...

Pretty much an empty concrete shell (been like that almost 10 years) but what the hell, might see something.

| | | My father has a corner office in a building across the street. It is 10 or so stories higher. There appears to be floors, however, they're all mid construction - they don't span accross the building, nor are they any stairs in place that I could see. Perhaps there *could* be some more complete floors/stairs closer to the ground floor, but from what I could see, there is no easy way to traverse the building. -rosie

| | | There's an entrance to a parking garage, yes. The only thing in that "stump" right now are two elevator shafts, and that's about it.

| | | The developers got as far as putting the foundation in place, including the underground parking (which is active), and the first few floors of the elevator shafts and mechanical stacks (which make up the big concrete "stub" you see above ground). If construction ever progresses as planned, the stub will rise to a height of 50 (or 60?) storeys, with concrete slab floors extending out in all directions. Finally, the outer "skin" of mirrored glass in metal framing will be put in place. The only likely point of interest for UE might be finding the roughed-in PATH passage that was planned to connect 11 Adelaide West in the Scotia Plaza with the Bay store. Good luck if you try!

| | | Got my curiosity up, and Googled this: http://www.navona.ca/News/ArticlesE/0502SkyHigh.html (Saturday, February 19, 2005) Talk also has heated up about a possible new development at the city's most celebrated elevator shaft on Adelaide near Bay Street. Brookfield Properties Corp. owns the site of the Bay Adelaide Centre, a proposed 50-storey skyscraper that was put on hold in 1993 when the market soured. Since then, the property has been running as an underground parking garage. Earlier this month, Brookfield chief executive officer Ric Clark talked about putting the firm's development staff to work, and people listened up. Brookfield spokeswomen Melissa Coley says the New York-based company is considering options for the site, including some form of mixed-use development that might combine residential units with office space. She cautioned that it is still early days. "We will explore all the different use alternatives," she says. "We have a lot of research to do. It could be anything. . . . It's not happening now."

Every year a new contract goes out for that wall for the ad space. That walls area is actually a whole acre, making it the largest advertising space in Toronto, after the Spadina /Front wall which is almost 1/4 the size (across from Skydome).
