| | Reflective Crap On Backpacks < on 9/4/2005 3:35 AM >
| | | I recently bought a new backpack, and it has two very bright white reflective strips along it's back. In the interest of not making it stand out so much at night, I would like to somehow either cover or remove the reflective property from these strips. I tried coating them in black permanent maker, but it did not work, now they just look weird. Short of putting electrical tape over them, does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

| | | If they aren't part of the bag's structure, and just an add-on, you can take a sharp knife and cut the stiches tha thold them on.

| | | you could just slather the reflective part with leather dye if you cant cut it out.. but leather dye soaks into fabrics and works really nice.. [last edit 9/4/2005 4:19 AM by Pravus - edited 1 times]

| | | did you try using spraypaint (cover the surrounding area with some matting) or an oil-based paint? good luck.

| | | I've had the same stuff on my backpack. just cutting it out won't damage the whole load-bearing capacity and whatnot of the backpack, but it will make it look shit. A good pull will get it off, if not, cut it at both ends and you can thread it out.

| | | How about trying a black permanent fabric marker to just color over the reflective material.

| | | Just use black or camouflage duct tape it will easily cut down on the glare if not remove it all together that way instead of cutting up you new back pack if you ever need to take it off easy as 123

Will the fabric marker really work much better than the sharpie permanent marker? Because the sharpie was crappy, it didn't do much at all.

| | | I invested in some fabric markers ($2 off ebay), and they didn't work any better than the permanent sharpie. In fact, they seemed to not even work as well. Also, I know duct tape may "fix" the issue, but I really don't want to be walking around all the time with duct tape on my bag. I think I'm going to try ripping it off now instead. Hopefully I can do so without causing too much damage.

Can you get it at walmart? If so, in what department can it be found?

dude. its UE not a fashion show. if it works why not do it, so what you got a little camo duct tape sticking to your back pack. its easy its cheap it works, and as pointed out before its easily reversable

| | | I'd assume it'd be somewhere in the shoe section, surplus stores should also carry it, or most any place that sells boots.. Just go to walmart and ask'em if they have any leather dye for boots.. 90% sure my buddy uses "Kiwi Honor Guard Leather Dye" to dye his packs and random lil things but it should all work

| | | In the theatre you use gaffer's tape [gaf tape] to cover up anything that is/was reflective, that you don't want the audience to see. It's as expensive as hell [$14/roll] but you will find no end to uses for it. It's completely opaque, tears easier than duct tape, but has more tensile strength. It's non conductive, completely matte, and heat resistant. It also doesn't leave residue when you remove it. It's like super-expensive black duct tape on steroids. It's available in something like 16 colors, but black and white are the most common. Look for theater supply stores in your area, if not you can find it on E-bay. ~Grit.

| | | While gaffer's tape is great stuff (just used some today) it DOES leave glue behind. Lots of it on everything it touches. At least my rolls do. Your best bet would be tape. That way you can remove it if need be.
