Dealing with Vermiculite/Zonolite. -Question-

I've never come across this in my explorations, but I've found it in my house.I've seen some pretty good arguments about Asbestos, and I want your opinions.

All I can say is. "Oh shit. My house is gonna kill me."

If its not the lead paint, its the damn asbestos. Theres a fair pile of this stuff spread out under the junction for the sewer pipe leading to our bathroom and master bathroom. For the time being, its just sitting there, I haven't touched it, and I'm looking into this a little more. But I do live in the Chicago area:

One of the top sites where the tainted vermiculite was shipped was West Chicago, Parker said. Target 5 learned that the former Grace plant recceived more than 273,000 tons. And that is why, Parker said, the federal government is now quietly analyzing the spot for contamination.

Zonolite went from the plant into area homes -- an estimated 800,000 homes in Illinois.

Fuck.

I need to get this stuff tested, anybody got any suggestions for dealing with this?

Vermiculite by itself isn't harmful IIRC, it's just a bunch of tiny fossils. You'll probably want to have an expert check out your insulation and determine whether or not it's actually asbestos-contaminated, and what to do about it.

If you're really concerned about it and don't want to pay for a cleanup, you could probably clean it up yourself. Seal off the area with plastic sheeting, grab a disposable coverall and asbestos-rated mask, and bag it all up. Use a shop vac to clean all nearby carpets, furniture, etc multiple times. It's probably better to get a professional's advice first.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Yes. As I understand it, the hazard comes from Vermiculite that was mined in Libby Montana. For about 60 years, this one location shipped out Zolomite that was tainted with "asbestos-like" fibers. A lot of the tainted stuff was shipped to Illinois, and now an estimated 800,000 homes in Illinois have it.

I have a HEPA vac I bought when I was removing the lead paint in our house, and I need to make sure I've got the right filters for it. I've got plenty of plastic sheeting and duct tape and masking tape, so later today I'll try sealing this off, and looking for a place to get this tested.

The stuff you're most likely to be dealing with is tremolite asbestos. The vermiculite insuliation was contaminated with tremolite and was still shipped out all over the world. Grace Co. really did a number on the town of Libby and it's residents.

How can I safely remove the vermiculite from my house and property?

If you live in Libby, Montana, you're in luck. EPA will remove the vermiculite from your property for free.
But if you live in another part of the United States, then you will have to pay an EPA-qualified business to remove the vermiculite. And the cost of removal isn't cheap.

Warning: Do not attempt to remove the vermiculite yourself. The removal process can expose the worker to dangerous levels of microscopic tremolite asbestos dust. If done improperly, the removal can contaminate a larger area of your property than was originally contaminated. Only hazardous waste specialists that are trained in vermiculite removal or asbestos removal should decontaminate your property. A special dust-control protocol, a special protective suit, and a special breathing apparatus are needed to protect the worker (hardware store dust masks are ineffective).
