| | | Port Credit Harbour Barge < on 10/14/2005 5:21 PM >
| | | I have often seen the barge out there providing the breakwater for the Port Credit marina. Google maps has the satellite image of the PC harbour and there seems to be a causeway of some type leading out to the ass end of the ship. What I do know is its a favorite hang out for the Shit hawks. Its seems to me a tempting UE but has the potential to go stinky and a squawky fast. Looking for some opinions. Cheers

| | | My opinion is that your avatar is super-hot. Anyhow... the seagulls will get the hell out of your way if you show up. It's terns that you have to worry about. If they have nests out there, they'll dive-bomb your head for sure. I'll have to check out the sat-images of this place... sounds interesting. C.

| | | After talking to a couple of friends, I may have a bit more info. The ship at the end of the marina is some type of freighter. One of my buds is a pilot for some regional airline, and he figures it has about 10 or 12 cargo hatches starting near the bow of the ship and running back to near the superstructure. Odds are the cargo holds won't have one damn interesting thing, but the rear of the boat certainly might. From the way he describes it, I'm guessing it was an old ore hauler of some sort, kind of like the Edmund Fitzgerald. Should be three, possibly four stories of exploring to do where the bridge, crew quarters, engines rooms, etc. are. Take us some good pics!
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

I live very near Port Credit. When I was younger my grandfather would take me out along the spit to the freighter and would use it as an example as he told me about the Edmund Fitzgerald and the shipping industry on the great lakes. It has been a while since I last took a close look at the ship. As far as I know the hulls are filled with heavy ballast, maybe even partially filled with cement.

| | | Might be a little tricky getting out there - the end of the pier is a favorite place for people to walk and stare at the huge wreck. I know I do when I'm out biking. Perhaps some clandestine operation from the lake side on an inflatable raft... [last edit 10/15/2005 3:59 AM by oldtimer - edited 1 times]

| | | Looks like a low budget attempt at making a break water like the one south of Ontario Place. That one is also old ships filled with concrete.

| | | the name of it eludes me but according to boatnerd it was a canadian straight decker that was simply scuttled while filled to the top with ballast. didnt look close but the typical canadian side straight decker has 16 hatch covers for 4-5 holds. its a fore pilorhouse ship which means 2 accomodation structures to visit. these ships carry still today most everything, grain, ore, taconite even coal. they are still out on the lakes but thier numbers are dwindleing because of self unloaders, i know the one in port credit was the object of a scrapping study 2 years ago because its steel is now hovering in the department of 3-4 million dollars, making break waters out of ships now with the high price of steel isnt economically feasable [last edit 10/15/2005 5:28 PM by nostra-YOUPPI! - edited 1 times]

Excellent picture of the Ridgetown... I honestly cant believe that ive lived 30 minutes away from this boat and never have seen it or heard about it. Check out that site there are tones of recent pictures of the old ship. I dont know about you guys but it looks like it may have to be a inflatable raft, as there seems to be a break in the land.... | | | The ship as mentioned before is the "Ridgetown", she still sports the Upper Lakes Shipping insignia on the stack. I've been told that her decks are covered in bird shit and a respirator should be worn in any attempt made to board her. A gentlemen from Port Credit has been trying to get some funding put aside for a group of volunteers to go out there and clean her off and then apply some paint to create a welcoming appearance, which reflects on the city.

| | | when I was a lot younger I'd go to that park and feed the ducks with my father and go fishing there too. My dad had told me that they had filled the ship with cement to use as a break for the water. As the rowing club is not to far away from there and it kept the water a lot calmer for them.

That would make sence...it be sad from a UE point of view but it makes sence from a practical point of view.
