sorry for the double posting(s)-
i live right down the street from this place.
there's absolutely no security. barb-wire fences surround the place but you could most likely squeeze in between the openings.
i talked to someone that used to work there (it's been closed for almost 15 years) and they said it's somewhat empty but still mattresses in the cells, etc.
i want to go but not by myself!

i don't believe in falling things at all.

Salem jail plans for the future: A restaurant/monopoly museum...

I couldn't even begin to make this up.

CONDOS DOMINATE JAIL REUSE IDEAS

By Steven Rosenberg, GLOBE STAFF
The Boston Globe
September 25, 2005

It could become a contemporary arts institute, a tourism center, or the site of a Parker Brothers Museum and Monopoly-themed restaurant. But with six of the nine proposals to redevelop the former Salem jail promoting condominiums, the new residents will not be murderers or thieves, but people who can afford to shell out more than $400,000 to hang their hats where cells now stand.

Three years after the city failed to find a qualified developer to purchase the old correctional facility, redevelopment of the site is now on a fast track. Last year, the city gave the property to the Salem Redevelopment Authority, and earlier this month the SRA received nine proposals for the site, including six for condominiums.

"Our goal is to designate a developer in October," said Lynn Duncan, executive director of the Redevelopment Authority.

On Wednesday, the five-member SRA board will review the proposals and pick a final group of developers who will be interviewed next month. "Potentially, it's going to be a difficult decision for the SRA," said Duncan.

Duncan said the SRA will evaluate the proposals through a set of criteria developed after public meetings, and with the aid of a consultant the city spent $35,000 to hire. While bids ranged from $1 to $750,000, the site will not go to the highest bidder, but to the developer whose plan best fits the SRA's vision of what is best for the downtown site.

"People would like to see some kind of mixed use as opposed to 100 percent condominium," said Duncan, referring to feedback the SRA received from residents.

With as few as 17 and as many as 80 condos being suggested by developers for the site, the proposals vary dramatically. In addition to condos, GLM Co. has proposed moving its commercial headquarters to the site. The owners of the Boon Gallery in Salem have proposed a contemporary arts institute on the site that would include a performance and lecture hall. Also, a New Milford, Pa., company has submitted a plan to build a tourism and multicultural center.

Boston developer Merrill Diamond has proposed building 27 condos in the old jail and eight town houses on the property, as well as three units in the former jail keeper's house and one unit in the former barn. He said the interior of the jail, which closed in 1991, would have to be gutted during construction. Diamond, who built condos at the former Dedham jail, said his firm would also donate a master plan study to the city that would focus on the Point neighborhood. If his firm is picked as the developer, Diamond will market the units between $400,000 and $600,000.

Diamond thinks that unusual historic properties, such as jails, are drawing cards to empty nesters and young professionals who want to live in a condo. At the former Dedham jail, all of the condos have been sold, with the average selling price at $700,000 per unit. At the former Brooks Hospital in Brookline, where people were once treated for smallpox, all of the condos built by Diamond have been sold including a unit where the morgue was located.

"People are fascinated with historic structures, and to some extent the more interesting the old structure, the more desirable it is," said Diamond.

That belief seemed to resonate with Karen Bell, a graphic designer who came to Salem last week to look for a condo. "That would be great, if it was historical," said Bell, who lives in Boston. "I would have no problem with the building. The idea of a jail doesn't bother me."

Betsy Merry, of Coldwell Banker in Salem, said her real estate firm has had discussions about marketing the property with three developers who submitted proposals. The three include a group of developers who want to put 17 condos on the property, along with a Parker Brothers Museum in the jail basement and a Monopoly-themed restaurant on the site; New Boston Ventures, which has proposed a 30-unit development, with retail stores and a jail museum; and Old Salem Jail Partnership, which has proposed 25 units and two offices.

Merry said the condo market in Salem is still hot. As of last week, there were 263 condos for sale in Salem, with an average price of $325,123. Merry said the numbers reflect the transition the city is making in accommodating people who want to live in an urban area. As of Jan. 1, nearly 30 percent of the city's 10,902 units are condominiums, according to the assessor's office.

do a forum search with the name of a location and see what other people have said about it, and what the responses were. Chances are - especially in your area, rugged - someone on UER has been there. And by chances, I mean 100%. Or if it's lame, then maybe 97%. If someone asked a question about it and got sarcastic/mean replies, you probably shouldn't rehash that shit. The PM tool is your best friend <3

Not so much on topic considering I have nothing to say about the salem jail, but useful information for the future.

[23:38:31] <metawaffle> I'm surprised the NE forum doesn't fall off UER from the weight of thread locks

Where's a good spot to post them in UER? I think I saw a prison thread somewhere?
