Ninja? Or frightened little boy?
| | Broken Maglite < on 10/25/2005 9:37 PM >
| | | I'm sure this question has been asked here before but I couldn't find a previous thread so: On my last expedition I dropped my trusty purple maglite. It still works fine, but the bulb broke when I dropped it and I can't get the broken bulb out of the socket. There's nothing to grab onto with pliers, only glass that breaks off if you try to turn it. Any advice? (Perhaps this will answer the age-old adage, how many UErs does it take to change a light bulb?)

| | | personally I would just crush the old bulb till there is nothing left but the wires then pull it out from the wires.. then of course just replace the bulb.. no real point in worrying that you will break it if it's chipping into a million pieces and doesn't work.. Either way just grab hold with pliers and give'er hell

| | | This is a full-sized (C or D batteries) Maglite, right? Now, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence or anything, but did you unscrew the little silver collar before trying to remove the bulb? With the collar off, the bulb should drop right out. Um... *blush* Whups. See, I assumed that it was like a regular lightbulb, with a threaded bottom, and so I was trying to unscrew it from the bottom... Never did it occur to me that the manufacturers would do something so rational as make it so that when the bulb broke, you could take it out. But thanks for the help, worked like a charm. Now the only problem is that I have grains of broken glass crushed in the threads of the plastic cover screw-on bit, and all along the inside of the shiny bit from when it broke...

| | | Ahh.. well then.. ignore what I said then.. it'd only work with the AA ones *smirk* I keep disregarding the fact that the larger maglites exist

How much do these cost, and have you used them at all? I am thinking of getting one for my 4D, but want to know whether it is worth it. Do they allow you to focus the beam like you can with the original bulb? If so, how well will they do tight spots? (ie with the bulb in it, my mag lets me get a relatively small circle, ie 1.5' or so at 20' IIRC). If they don't let you focus, how wide is the beam? edit: wtf? I hadn't known they made strange colors (ie anything but black) in the large sizes. [last edit 10/26/2005 10:58 PM by totensiebush - edited 1 times]

The Everled is probably the best Luxeon LED Maglite upgrade "bulb". I recommend the Lambertian version, you should be able to get a tighter beam than with their standard side-emitting version. Diamond makes a few different LED upgrades too, but their higher-power models have a reputation for overheating.

| | | and if you use an LED your batts will last longer too. And yes, I think the 4D comes in Black, Blue, Purple....and I think I may have seen a silver somewhere once. [last edit 10/27/2005 4:10 AM by Logan - edited 1 times]
