So I was wandering around today, and I found a lovely abandoned building I wanted to get inside (big fence all around, razor wire at some points). As I was looking at it, contemplating a nearby window, a police officer walked up... she looked like she was patroling the area (there was a huge art show the next warehouse over, and parking around the abandoned building in question). I said hi, and we talked for a moment. When it seemed that she wasn't about to continue her rounds, I asked her "I don't suppose you know if there's any chance I could get inside to take some pictures?"

To my surprise, she said, "Shouldn't be too hard. Just don't hurt yourself and watch out for broken glass, and I'll say I didn't see anything. That window over there looks pretty low, you might be able to get in that way."

I thanked her, and vaulted into the building. I met her on my way out (still wandering around the parking areas). She asked how the shooting was going, and I told her it was great.

FOCUS:

Has anyone else run into genuinely helpful police officers? I've read some stories of cops that turn a blind eye, and some about generic security that can be helpful, but what about full on officers of the law?

Yes. I was trying to find the old YMCA building in Frankfort, Kentucky and was driving all around the city. A police officer pulled me over after I started driving on an apparent private drive at 1 AM in the morning. He asked me what I was doing up so late and driving around aimlessly, and I told him I was looking for the old YMCA building so I could do night photography.

He politely told me where it was and said have a good night!
