| | | card access hackers wanted < on 11/1/2005 6:55 PM >
| | | the thread on magnetic stripe cards has prompted me to come forward with this thought thats been bugging me and I know there are many types of card access systems. one of the more common (and seemingly vulnerable) is a passive circuit that responds to a minute little RF signal emanating from the pad. sometimes these are called transponders. has anyone hacked these or come up with a way to defeat one? I took a card apart once it looked a lot like the anti-theft tags at department stores just a printed copper trace "tuned" circuit. my theory is untested and not really researched much so feel free to shoot holes all in it. but couldnt one use a simple frequency counter to obtain the precise signal and use a MW transmitter to send a signal to the reader? anyone know what band these work in or if the signal is modulated? any techies out there want to chime in this would be like a universal pass around here so many places use these oh yeah in Texas its a felony to possess a mag card reader but this is not a mag card and its not a reader

| | | What your describing is called a Proxmity Card. Some of them out there are ISO 14443 a.k.a "Contactless Smart Card", which in that case, its a two-way communication.

| | | From what i can remeber all it does is that it changes the freqences sent out by the reader and the reader picks up the new freqency. so theoritally you could use a anti theft tag but it would be very unlikely that it would work. r0n22
