I'm interested in exploring the Cranston Street Armory (http://www.artinruins.com/arch/decay/armory/). Does anyone have any interesting/useful information concerning this building? (Not necessarily related to exploration, I'm very interested in its history and even did a school project on it.) Of course, anything sensitive should be messaged, not posted.

The state or specifically the city of Providence was supposed to renovate it
and use it for various things. With budget cuts and stuff I don['t think it will happen. A while ago some developer was supposed to turn it in to more
condo's, I think the money ran out.

Anyone else have any info on this?

Metalwitch: AFAIK, (having done that project) it is currently a building in search of someone willing to pay for the renovations so that they can use it. The most recent proposal was a year ago, Question 6 on the R. I. ballot, to turn it into storage space for the State Archives, as well as office space for state use. This measure passed in the city, but as one moved away from the urban areas, it lost support. Before that, there were a plethora of suggestions, but none of them had any sort of financial backbone... so it has been since the Guard moved out in '94.

You are quite right. I do know that the city wanted it for some community type stuff. Money runs out etc, etc.
I'm glad you are enjoying that link I suggested to you. ;)

Are we sure that this one is abandoned because when I drove by I saw lights on as well.

Its defiantly not just abandoned and let fall to shit. Better word for it would be vacant or closed. Would be wicked cool to get in. Maybe we should call the city of providence and see if a few of us would be able to get in legally and photograph it.

I don't think it's abandoned either, but I also don't think there is anyone actively occupying it... I haven't been by in a while so I can't say for sure.

Good idea, Blend... The first time I saw the Armory (from the inside!) was when they were having an open house to promote awareness for the ballot issue last year. That's how I became interested in it.

It is definitely not "abandoned". Its heavily secured, maintained and under surveillance. Its in a really shitty neighborhood, and the place is almost never vandalized. A friend of mine who was living in Olneyville when the whole eviction scandal went down, said that he, and a few of his friends were told that it was going to be renovated soon, and they were invited to live there. I'll ask him for more info.

I think if there were six of us that wanted a "photo preservation" tour opportunity, it definitely wouldn't hurt to ask. The preservation registry dudes have an office right in downtown on Washington St. I walk past it a lot, and I've wanted to them about websites like Art In Ruins, and their involvement and opinions on similar projects.

Are you talking about the West Broadway Neighborhood Association? I interviewed Ms. Lang for my project, and I go to school with her cousin.

Anyways, photo tour, sounds good to me.

Nah, these guys: http://www.ppsri.o.../tenmost/index.php

Although, it says their main office is on Meeting St, so maybe they only have a small office inside the Neighborhood Association building, if that's whats on Washington St.
I dunno. So... who wants government sanction?

Heads up about the cranston st. armory. Being that i have connections in the RI army National Guard, It should be warned that unless u want to deal with an active alarm system. I would advise getting permission to enter there. It is still considered military property, so if you break in, and set off the alarms (which you will) expect to get caught and prosecuted very heavily.

I just don't want to see anyone get screwed, Cause i've wanted to go myself for a long time.

Oh yeah did i mention i've heard rumors it's a storage site for the guard, for crap like tables and chairs. Basically it's a place too keep stuff that no one would even think about stealing. I mean i could be wrong but like Lou said he's seen lights on which means they're still paying for juice in there. Which means they will have an active zone alarm system and motion detectors.

It isn't abandoned. It's also used every so often for community functions. Things like vaccinations, registering for community groups and voting.
