| | | Hey, I'm ew to the boards, so heres a few quick snaps of my most recent outing on the uoft campus. Went with a partner to one of the slightly more dilapidated engineering buildings behind medsci earlier this week (HA). The majority of the floors were relatively uninteresting(although the 3rd floor did manage to get me excited with an interesting opportunity which ended up being a goose chase, or climb..) Frustratingly, most of the interesting doors were locked, such as the upper most utility room/roof access door (and the entire 2nd floor was locked down for that matter, though a peek through the windows revealed a sign denoting it as the "Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology", which I suppose explain the card swipe locks and intercoms at all the 2nd floor doors.) But, some were luckily left unlocked, like this one at the bottom of a staircase in the basement:
This door opened up into what looks like a storage room for a bunch of old engineering and science projects, another pair of doors and a staircase leading to a third door were opposite the one we entered through.
This is taken from the staircase, the blue door we came through and in the background the large green/silver framework container in the back corner is I think a large battery or capacitor or something (but then I'm an artsci so what do I know, right?). This picture was taken from the bottom few steps of this staircase:
The red sign on the door reads an alarm will sound upon opening it, and although it was very slightly ajar, there looked to be a mechanism up on the top frame on the other side. The basement was actually the first place we went, so we decided to hold off going through this door until we checked out the rest of the building just in case an alarm did go off. So we went back down the stairs and tried the two other doors in the storage room, both were locked. However a relatively large gap between the door frame and the side of the door, along with a little coaxing, proved that one of the doors was not locked after all but merely stuck. And this is what that room revealed:
A stepladder, some chairs, a hotwater heater, and cardboard boxes....Huzzah. There were actually a few other pieces of machinery, a spiderweb of piping on the ceiling, and an eery sign alluding to the animated and sentient nature of the clicking and hissing machines before us.
An unlocked custodial closet on the 3rd floor revealed this possibly interesting ledge:
After getting a boost up I discovered much to my disappointment that it was a dead end. So down I hopped and we continued our relatively fruitless exploration of the building. After much of the rest of the building having little to offer in the way of accessable routes for furthering our quest, we went back down to the basement to try our luck with the "alarmed" door. First here are few pics of some of the interesting things in the storage room:
Smoke screen! Just in case we need to make a hasty retreat?
Someone's got their own little mini office tucked away in a corner behind all this junk. So now we try the door that says its alarmed..ever so slowly I open the door prepared for the worst, but it never comes. The object above the door is an L bracket that may have held a trigger before, but its gone now! The room presented us with a pair of lockers filled with work clothes and pylons, another pair of doors, locked (surprise surprise) and large set of blue double doors leading outside, which we followed.
So, interesting trip all in all, though no overly exciting finds. A series of locked doors still leads this building open to possibilities however. So theres my latest adventure, hope you enjoyed following along a little. -miken
