| | Deadbolt Nudging < on 2/18/2006 4:11 AM >
| | | Can anyone further indulge me on this technique. I think I did it once using a knife to push the spring loaded deadbolt back into the door and using a key or piece of metal of sorts to "save" my progress while I once again nudged the deadbolt. Does this only work on some doors, anyone have any links to videos of this technique?

| | | 1st - Its not a deasbolt. Deadbolts aren't spring loaded and break things if out&slammed. It only works on some doors, yes. And why do you need a video? all it is is pushing, holding---pushing until it butterknifes. tada.

This only works on very old or cheap doors latches. Virtually all of the new fire doors and exterior doors will have a mult-part catch to stop this as well as a weather sil that extends beyond the edge of the door to keep tools and air out. If you think you did it once then you don't need a video to show you again. It's simple mechanics if you look at how a door catch works. And, Mindhacker is correct. Catches (what's attached to door knobs) are not the same as deadbolts. There is no way past a properly installed deadbolt but to pick the lock or smash the frame. They cannot be nudged. There's a third way, if you want to nit-pick. A crow bar jammed between the frame and the deadbolt can pry the deadbolt far enough to get through it. Or so I've heard....

| | | Sometimes if a deadbolt lock is improperly installed, the hole that is drilled in the frame to accept the bolt isn't deep enough, and therefore the bolt cannot extend all the way. If this is the case, it will not "lock" in place and may be able to be moved in little increments using this so-called "nudging" technique. See other threads about butterknifing/slipping bolts, I had some comments that I wish not to re-type about designation between latch and lock bolts, dead bolts etc. ~Grit

Yes well, it'll work just as well on steel-framed doors.

it'll work just as well at destroying the fuck out of steel framed doors. leverage is a bitch, and crowbars are all about putting leverage to work.

| | | please use the crowbar tactic only as a last ditch effort, beyond even picking. Usually you can get in without even picking... just be creative and resourceful and you'll be fine. Nothing alerts authorities faster than the door being ripped off of its hinges, so even if you make an access point, it won't stay there for long, and the chances of increased security are high except for the most abandoned of buildings. Then again, you just made an access point for the unskilled meth heads and gangbanger taggers, so you'll be partially to blame when the next explorer trips a methlab trap and gets their face blown off with a shotgun rig, something you probably don't want on your conscience. On an unrelated note, jimmying the door is easiest when there's a large gap between the door and the frame. On a non-deadbolted door, if you ever find the door open and you've got a long time to work with it without anyone dropping in on you, you can take a flat piece of plastic and remove the latch off the frame of the door and put in the plastic piece behind where the lock mechanism pushes into the doorframe. Then, the door "locks," and appears locked, but is incredibly easy to be jimmied. This is usually the method of choice if you find another way in and want to set up an easier access point. If you have more questions on this, direct them to Grit, as he is infinitely more skilled in this field than myself. -J
