| | | Me and my buddy are looking to get up a 35 ft wall. We can hop and skip and pull ourselves through all the ledges until we hit this one. Is there any way I can like make a grappling hook out of reebar or sumthing of that nature?

| | | Do you have access to a MIG welder? You could definitely make one from $20 worth of parts at Home Depot if you had access to equipment to do so.

| | | A grappling hook used by prisoners to escape. If they can do it with limited resources, you can do it! ;)

| | | More then likely would be easier to just buy a PoS like http://www.amazon....v=glance&n=3375251 the rope is crap and the hook isn't the best, but it's pretty much the only one under $100.. But I don't see it being hard to make a hook out of Rebar or one of my buddies made one out of the huge ass nails

In all reality something like that would be very easy to make and more then likely pretty cheap, all you really need is steel cable a few lil connector guys then something to go across if its pipes or lil steel bars..

I'm thinking that rebar might be too soft... to easy to bend once you start climbing. I don't know for sure. I haven't worked with a lot of it, but I know I made a yard type Christmas tree out of rebar a couple of years ago, and when I put the lights on it, it bent over like a wet noodle. Just from lights. I think it was 3/8, but not sure. If you get up to a size that would hold a humans weight, would it be too heavy to throw that high?

| | | You could always treat the rebar, cold work or temper or such. Of course I'd end up doing it Ghetto-style, with a propane torch and a bucket of water. I'd still like to see the plans, Mark. Please???

| | | I think there are different diameters of rebar, it is mild steel, no? I can't imagine a 1/2" round mild steel failing but the tempering is a good idea. N.

| | | I'm guessing you should buy a hook, a propane torch will take a year to heat rebar. An Oxy-Acetylene outfit would be the way to go, they're cheap $300 for a little one, and not that $30 hardware store one that runs out of 02 in 5 min. A vice and a good hammer would be nice. And a welder and a guy who knows how to use it. I know a guy who made a rebar ladder and one of the rungs fell off because he was just learning with the welder. The design was superb, but the weld penetration wasn't. He has become much better since, but do you want to trust your life to a poor weld? If you don't have any of the above equipment and have not been using it for a few years and build this anyway........Best of luck to you, you'll need it. I'm not trying to discourage you, but I have seen a few posts by people that talk like they read this stuff in a book and never actually have done it. I'd just hate to see someone get hurt. And yes I do have this stuff and have been welding for over 15 years.

| | | If there are two of you, a large wooden pole with footholds may be enough, but it would need to be held by somebody other than the climber. Making it sectional would be simple and effective, and assembly would be relatively quick.
