Ok guys, just a few words from a newbie to the forums who happened to go to the Cascades Job corps from approximately 94-95.

There is secuirty on the premise, but it's not for the job corps. Half of the buildings were for vocational training, the other half was for a criminal rehibilitation program.

While I was there there was more than one lockdown because of peole escaping the criminal rehibilatation program. (Ok, two. it's not like it happened every day.)

Second off, as to being escorted off the site. The site, as is approprate for what kind of facility it used to be, is way off in the middle of nowhere. Sence the job corps students weren't allowed to have cars of thier own, we were often bussed to places.

Nothing sinister about that at all.

Please keep in mind too that a lot of the students when I went there were recovering from drug abuse. while I beleive inspirits and the supernatural, most of the peole who told me that they saw the little girl were, to put it simply, permafry. Not exactly the creme of the crop for reporting mysterious goinggs on.

If you guys have any quesitons at all about the place I'll do my best to dust off the combwebs and remember and/or contact my old roommate ato discuss it.

Oh and when I was there they had the people in the rehibilatation program tear down roughly half of the buildings in the Job Corps half. I remember a flap about them burning asbestos... yah, that's what you get when you use people you can leagally pay a dollar an hour too...

hey, i live down the street from nsh and sometimes i get the notion of shadowy figures on the outside of my fence. not unfriendly but a little unnerving. i always figured it was some of the "residents" of nsh, but i haven't gone wandering up there in years...

it's amazing looking at them pictures! the main nurses place looks
like the place my mom stayed in in the early 90's i remember that
place in my head as if i was there now and i remember what the main
room looked like were everyone stayed...it makes me kind of sad to
see this. this place made my parents get a divorce because my dad
sent her there due to suicide stuff and drinking and drugs of some
sort...i never knew of this stuff till i was 18# 1999 and she was
there in 88 i found out as of recent and 90-92 and a small stint in
94. i dont talk to my mom know more at all so it's hard to get them
pictures of them hallways and the mourge and kitchen and such she
got to see it all...i have heard so many stories from my mom about
this place in the past from a guy killing him self with glass to the
arms to people that smuggled candy and surgar of such due to she
said you could not have it in there. and that cigarettes were hard
to come by...all i remember is my parents arguing and me out back
playing basketball in a fenced area when i was 9 i remember the
cement slab and the flat basketball and my mom telling me to go play
after i had not seen her in 4 months :'( i remember her saying that
the other building in the middle was newer and was for i think drug
and alcoh type things. and that faced a fallen in barn or something
and i think tennis courts i am not 100% and then if you drove
straight ahead to the right there was tomb stones and all i could
see was the tops the grass was so high and they were falling over. i
asked a nurse when i was there and she told me to hush and not ask
questions. questions are for adults not little boys. i will remember
that till the day i die her face and her saying that to me so mean.
i remember the tv room was th eonly nice place i seen in the whole
building it had carpet and magazines. and were my mom sleeps it was
cubed areas and you could hear the people up stairs walking around
and she said that them people up stairs are bad people they cant go
outside they will run away and they were under security eye and i
remember the bars on the windows and how i was scared to go in there
at first and then i remember her telling me weird storys...il wright
more another time i am very tired and such...thanks janie

i called my mom and asked here some questions about the place.
il asnwere them
i asked her about them barrels she had told me about!
her reply was she said when they took that tour of the grounds
snooping around when she was there. they where like small paint like
cans with she said dust like contents...she said she swears it was
human ashes she said there was a room with as much as 70 of these
small cans....in this period of time my mom still had her mentality
and such so i dont think she would have lied. i seen pictures of
them to they where chrome and rusty and i can not say really the
size due to the picture is kind of far away but i can say it is
bigger then a pop can. and she said in the hallways of them old
places there was no warm feelings no pictures no carpet and the only
place she said she seen pictures was int he nurses room.

i also asked if she would send the pictures she has and she said no due to
she dose not want to loose them or get lost and i asked maybe copies
and she said no i can do it when i come visit! in wich i highly
think it will be never since i cant take her mentally ill stuff and
such.

also asked about that guy killing him self when she was there. she
said she started dating this guy after my parents got there divorce
(this is new to me) and i went to live with my real dad in oregon
due to the divorce and she said she and him had to keep it not known
due to it was in the rules no romance and such between patiants...i
cant remember his name she said it once in the past about him but
not this much detail to my sister. she said they fell in love allot
and they were able to leave for a little while due to my mom had a
car and she said they would go to the store and get a expresso at
some market. and then she said the people at the drug and alcohol
said no more and she said it was one of the roomates that told on
her....well she skipped allot fo stuff im guessing and said he went
for a walk and he did not come back in his 45-min time and he slit
his wrists (not 100% if this true)

Can anyone help me? I'm doing a project for school, I am researching the history of mental hospitals, and how they are used as a form of punishment. I am particularly interested in NSH. I grew up in the area, and have driven by it numerous times. My dad used to work with the mentally handicapped there when it was called Portal. Probably during the early 90's. I vaguely remember going through the old hospital with him and being really creeped out. I want to tour NSH really bad, and I want to do it legally. Any suggestions? Is the farm part of it fair game? Can anyone go there and look around? Is there anyone I can contact about getting access to the older buildings? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Not to be a bitch but you expect a lot for having this be your only post. There's tons of books on hospitals and you can do your research that way. They don't give tours. That would open them up to being sued. Do a google search of nsh. There's isn't a lot, but there's stuff in general about how people were locked away to protect "themselves" or really just to keep them out of sight of 'normal' people. There's all type of info in books, journal articles, and websites about what was used as "treatment" which through our filters seems horrific. Yes you can wander around the farm and the cemetery theyre both open to the public. The barns are a park. The sign asks people not to wander into the structures, but whatever.

My fiance were curious about the place for the last three months, our daughters boyfriend lives up the street from the N.S.H. cemetary ( the new one ) NE way we decided to drive through the place to see what it looked like because for the past year we have only driven past the whole farm type buildings which are pretty spooky looking themselves! We drove around the whole site and no one even batted an eye at us I dont think. However the feelings we got just from driving around the place was spooky especially around the condemned buildings, so we decided to google the place and have only read a little about the place so for now all we know is that it was built in 1910 and was opened in 1911 it was a hospital for the insane and alot of the patients were women who's husbands sent them there when they had reached menepausal stages in their lives which is quite terrible if you ask me.... we also read that there were reports of malpractice and abuse of the patients there possible murders but who knows?! There is some documentary at the WWU library in Bellingham that a Judge Thomas E. Grady filed complaints of happenings there that was pretty interesting there was some good details in his review for the state his concerns were some of the deaths there by some of the dangerous patients and staff members he petitioned the state to further investigate the way things were being run at the facility.

I think it would be very interesting to locate the judges journal of his findings at the N.S.H. we will continue to investigate to see how much grit we can find out.... we believe in ghost too, but will never be curious enough to want to walk through the insides of the old building to find out so for now we will just continue to read about it... have fun everyone with your own research its pretty exciting to learn about this but we should all remember that these were human beings just like us and I am sure that alot of the people were not there by choice and were just victims.... may they all rest in peace at some point I find it disturbing to know that there are just plain humans running facilities like this they should be the ones locked up!

While we were in town today, we stopped by the library, and I checked into the document that keeps coming up called the "Amid fields of alyssum: a year at Northen State, compiled by Dick Fallis, published in 1984" I found that book to be not very good at talking about what was really going on up there!!!!!The only thing that seemed to be any good in that book was he had a map, showing all the buildings and when they were build, also what was in them!!!! but that seems to be it!!!

However the one that still stands out to me is that one by that Judge, he actually has testomomy of real people that worked there, and like I said, I'd love to find his journal of findings from that time!!!

I thought there'd be more people responding to what we wrote!! But that's ok!!!
Another thing when we went up there over the weekend, when we were driving by some of the abandoned blg.'s there seemed to be a film crew there doing something, we seen guys actually running around with cameras, tripods, and extention cords, seemed very strange!!!
