Do you have any questions about the belt?
| | | | D50 repair question < on 5/4/2006 6:57 PM >
| | | I’m considering buying a damaged D50 from work & fixing it. Before I do I wanted to run it by some of the experts on here. Here’s the deal, a few weeks ago the computer store I work at got robbed. Some clowns pulled a smash & grab and got away with a bunch of demo cameras & notebooks but left behind a Nikon D50 they broke trying to get off the security device. The body is missing about a 2 ½” sliver of plastic under the flash, but other than that it works fine. I asked my GM about it and he said he’d sell it to me for $300. Problem is it’s been reported as stolen to the insurance co. so he can’t sell it as a camera, which means no warranty (I know that wouldn’t cover physical damage anyway). So if I buy it I would want to repair the housing. I’ve been checking E-Bay for a junker I can use for parts and did a bit of Googling, but I can’t find any plastics. Can even get replacement body parts anywhere, for how much and how difficult would it be to repair? Also the fact that it will not have any type of warranty concerns me. Is it possible to get some type of third party coverage on it? Insurance or something? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm taking a road trip from Santa Barbara to Cincinnati in two weeks and really want to have a decent camera for the trip. Here are some pics of the camera in question:

| | | You may be able to order that small body part directly from Nikon. It may cost a little bit, but at least you'd have the one part you need. If you're about to take a road trip you could probably just leave the camera as is, or cover up the hole with some gaffers tape (not heavily sticky).

| | | He's going to sell it for $300? Doesn't sound like a good deal for just the body. What's his insurance deductible? $300? Tough call, but I wouldn't call that a friend price for something that he's already written off!
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

| | | Yeah I agree.... $300 for that is $300 too much. At best, I'd give him $150 for the undamaged lens and expect the fubar camera for free.

It's actually the kit, lens & all. I just got a part # and price from Nikon. $14 with shipping. My main concern now is how much of a pain it would be to replace. Without an exploded view (which I've been looking for) it's hard to tell what needs to come apart to fix it. Anybody have experience fixing cameras? Again, it works perfect, I've been playing with it all day. It's mostly cosmetic damage.

| | | A disassembly routine: http://www.lifepix...n-instructions.htm That's more for the back, but the from should be just as simple. Take the lens off and make sure that you don't loose the screws and get another camera and take pics of you taking it apart. Document it because people WILL want to see it later. | | | I decided to buy the camera and get the part from Nikon. From just looking at the camera I thought I would need to remove the bayonet mount and possibly some internal parts so I had Nikon fax me an exploded view to see what had to be removed. It turned out to be way simpler. Just needed to remove 6 screws. The one under the AF/Manual switch had a sticker covering it wich I removed w/ an exacto knife. The flash button had a small retaining clip that was easily popped off the same way. Then just replaced the plastic housing, screwed it down and done. (sorry about the image quality. Crappy camera)
I'm psyched. This is my first SLR, now I have to learn to use it. I might take a class somewhere when I can afford it. And I only paid $300 for the kit and a 1Gb SD card. Cant beat that.
