Exploring Drains... Help?
< on 11/2/2003 4:29 AM >
Posted on Forum: Infiltration Forums

I was wondering if anyone had some ideas on exploring runoff street drains. I've traveled for a couple miles in some and my main question is if anyone has found any efficient ways to travel in pipes 3 feet or less in diameter. Recently I have just been using knee and elbow pads, but I'm sure there's a quicker way to get around, like using a skateboard or some special crawling technique etc... I'd appreciate any ideas, thanks.

In general, it is conseiderd bad forum manners to post two nearly identical posts covering the same topic, one right after the other...

EDIT: Please ignore my post, it no longer applies.

Yeah, how about a skateboard, you can get some oversized off-road wheels if the regular ones get cought on too much crap. How far are you thinking about going in these crawl-tunnels?

Check out #1 first, it's a general overview. Then go expect to spend an hour reading #2, it's got pretty much everything you need to know about draining in it.

As far as your specific question... the skateboard method seems about the best way, but you need something with very large tires on it. Perhaps a modified version of one of those little push-scooters, the ones with the 15-cm or so wheels?

Is this like what you are looking at angeldust? I wish I had a skateboard with today, this section was very dry and clean.

The infiltration guide is a great source, I printed a copy of it years ago, and still look over it from time to time.

You don't have to have oversized tires on your board. If the tunnel is small enough, use the "crab-skate" technique. You lay on your back (ass pointed FORWARD), and use your legs to pull and your hands to push on the sides and top of the tunnel. It sounds awkward, but it is really the best way. Otherwise, I just sit down on it.

CMH4, I think bigger tires would keep you from getting bogged down in any crap that might be festering in the bottom of a tunnel. If you have 5cm wheels and the crap in the tunnel is 6cm high, then you've got a real problem. You probably want wheels with a radius a little bigger than how deep the crap in the tunnel is.

I actually haven´t made one (yet), but homemade sled resembling streetluge and skateboard with wheels from baby carriage would be nice. It would have to be short enough (maybe small enough to just fit under your torso?) to be able to turn it in cramped spaces. Nothing fancy, but just strong enough to move you around.

For bigger drains, really low recumbent bicycle could be nice... =)

I made a drain-board for this purpose: big shopping cart wheels on a piece of wood, attached to a denim vest (so I don't have to carry it). I can just lay down on my back, and push or pull with my feet. Works pretty slick, although I don't recommend swivel wheels for curved-bottom drains (you'll rock side to side almost as much as you move forward).

Here's a pic (in which I'm scooting on one knee: the folded denim vest also makes a nice pad for this purpose): http://www.actionsquad.org/ulands24.htm

A skateboard might work, but you'll want bigger wheels. I used to use my old Ramp Rat, but it would stop dead every time I hit a crack between sections, or a tiny pebble. Plus it sucked having to carry it around ... I prefer my wearable model!

I'm looking for software engineers to hire at Amazon.

Maybe I could get one of the old "scooters" from my old gymn class in elementary school. Anyone rememember those? They didn't realize they were creating drainers!

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

You could try one, but the wheels might be kind of small. You might want two scooters, one for chest, one for legs.

None of the small tunnels I've been in have that crap. If you think you need oversized wheels, go ahead and blow your dough. I didn't.

how anout ditchskating? I stopped by some of the local storm drains (they're open-air unless there's a parking lot to cross or something) and it was freezing over into a solid block of ice.

Digging up the dead w/ this post...but that is okay I didn't want to create a new thread.

Max..Can you share the dimensions of your board with me and possible some better pics? I need to create 2 of these for me and a friend to see where we end up. Where do you hold your flash light?
