The demolition permit was approved with a 60 day freeze that commenced on June 14th. Too tired to look for a link.

On the 14th of this month the hold is over and the final decision on the fair lady's fate will be decided. My thoughts are with her.

Well the guard is back. He was gone when I visited the place a few weeks ago. Kinda sad actually -- the guy didn't even have uniform pants (jeans and dress shirt) on and was telling me in broken english that he was depressed. He said they have guards 24-7 now which seems pretty accurate because I was chatting with him around 9PM last saturday night on the long weekend.

I'm not sure why they painted over the sunflower mural, but now everything is refinforced more and painted over.

Anybody know what the hell is going on there? I'm curious

They weren't there holiday monday. We almost got in, but the shop owner heard my two companions on the roof and came out and yelled them off. Then I had to sit higher up and wait till the coast was clear before I could come down (Shop owner couldn't see me). And I don't think the 24/7 thing was true. Unless they just started it really recently. Cause everytime I have scouted her out, they are gone after a certian late hour. And yes, there are more boards. That much is definitely true. Climbing over them was kinda fun

Lister Block talks extended

The Hamilton Spectator
(Aug 10, 2006)

Lister Block will live at least another month. Councillors agreed yesterday to extend talks to decide the downtown landmark's fate until mid-September.

A stakeholders group, including the developer, city officials and heritage advocates, have been meeting privately for nearly two months to try to find a solution for the historic building.

The Labourers International Union of North America and Hi-Rise group want to tear down the landmark to build a $30-million office building with a replicated facade.

The plan is bitterly opposed by heritage groups who believe the building can be saved. The province intervened in the local debate to convene the group, which was originally given 60 days to try to find a compromise.

Well, who knows what the hell is happening now.

If I could afford to take off work, I would start a rally out front and try and save her. I wouldn't leave her side.

Structurally, the building is fine. The inside has just been torn to complete hell by vandals, movie shoots, and such.
As much as I love this building, if any action were to be taken, I'd love to see a interior restoration, the building returning to an active state.. it seems much more sensisble than a complete rebuild, as the demolition alone would seriously harm the local businesses, not to mention traffic pattern would have to be completely rerouted, harming the flow of pedestrians into Jackson Square.

Tru say! As is customary for downtown Hamilton, she is smooshed against other active buildings. so total demo would be a bitch. gutting teh insides ad redoing them would be best. And even alot of the insides can still be saved. I mean that marble floor is still cold hard and smooth under all that rubble and dust. (Kinda like Teresa's boyfriend, only white.)

Oh, and not only will pedestrians need to be rerouted due to the dangers of demolition, but so will alot of traffic. she's really close to the roads, and is on a corner. Some businesses will be cut off for days. All so a building that could be restored can be pointlessly torn down.

... but what it all boils down to is back room politics. This prevails over even common sense.

Lister will be torn down, this is only a small reprieve to find some kind of "middle ground". Probably a very small part of the facade to be incorporated into the new building as a cheap dedication... meanwhile LIUNA rakes in the money and DiIanni pays back a favor previously granted to him.

mmm I love politics. This is part of why I am not going into PR, though I am skilled in the field, I would not be able to put up with this bullshit for the rest of my life every day, more than I already have to.

And we all know if they really wanted to protect her they would hire a full time guard and it would not be G4. They just want it to look like they care.

I can only hope those twisted assholes meet terrible fates, ones they have earned.

It would be sad to see such a place go.Of course I havent been there, but Ive seen the photos.
I dont know much of anything about Hamilton but I dont think demo-ing it is a problem for them. They do it in NYC every day. They will just put up lots of scaffolding so the pedestrians wont get hurt.
They always just figure its so much easier to tear things down.I guess we will soon have to get used to a disposable world.
When money is involved people dont care about preserving history and memories, and its sad.
