| | | Q-Tips! I don't know about the rest of you, but the 'Orb' controversy is getting rather old. Bring some Q-Tips to clean the crap off of you lens. No dirt, no orbs. If not Q-Tips, at least bring some lens paper...

| | | I always thought 'orbs' were caused by floating dust, not dust on the lens itself, which explains why they only show up in some pictures.

| | | The problem with Q-Tip (tm) type cotton swabs is they tend to leave little wisps of cotton where they don't belong. Just use a t-shirt. Really. It's not like any of us are using really expensive lenses (like a 35mm PC-Distagon, heh). Really, if you bring a camera, you should bring a tripod. And a cable release. And a lens shade. And an off-camera flash. And...

| | | The "orbs" are caused by the flash reflecting off of dust in the air, not dust on the lens. You still should try to shoot with a clean lens though.

| | | If you are worried about having to clean your lens in the field and possibly getting cleaning marks on it, you can just carefully clean your lens at home, and then slap one of those UV filters over it. You can just keep the filter on throughout the expedition (people who actually know what they're doing may frown on this though) and then the only thing that gets dirty is the $10 filter, which you can clean however you like since it's so cheap. This of course assumes you have a camera that actually accepts filters.

This is what I have been doing, just throw on the UV filter and go. If I see something I want to get some good pictures of and dont think my lens will get dirty, I can just screw of the filter and take some shots.

| | | No, orbs are not real. Microfiber cloths are pretty cheap, but a clean spot on a t-shirt works fine.

| | | I dunno, i wouldnt say they arent real... I've seen some weird stuff, like video camera footage with a buncha orbs floating around that definately aren't dust particles. so I wont say they aren't real... I'm undecided

| | | I take my big SLR everywhere and as the lens is fairly expensive, I go out of my way not to scratch it.
Posted by outageyou can just carefully clean your lens at home, and then slap one of those UV filters over it. |
Definately a possibility - but the filter can sometimes screw things up. I'd also not reccommend kleenex or t-shirts if you're protective of your lens because the fibres can scratch. The best thing I have found is either a microfibre cloth OR a nice and convenient thing that works well on expeditions - go to Lenscrafters (wearing a pair of glasses would make you seem more authentic) and ask for a free tune up or whatever you call it. Then when you're finished they'll give you a package of disposable lens cloths, ask for a couple extra and they will hand you a handful. They are INCREDIBLY convenient. | | | To get the dust and hairs off of my lens I usually use a little rabbit fur duster I got at a camera shop. Really works well, and picks up all the dust nicely. Another must is to bring some spare film, or spare memory cards if you are using digital. Especially if you think you are about to get caught. Replace the film with the unused one, or replace the memory card with a spare, so that there are no pictures. That should keep you outta trouble.

I think so too. I've got alot of pictures with white, half transparent orbs in them and I'm sure they are just a reflection of the flash off dust so close to the lens it appears to be perfectly round because of how badly out of focus it is, but I also took a picture (you'll have to take my word for it, I can't believe I lost it) that had an orb that was easily 5 times bigger than any i've ever seen, completely white, the orb cast a shadow on the wall, and part of it was behind a crutch standing about 8 feet from the camera. This was not a picture of a piece of dust. [last edit 12/1/2003 3:03 AM by mike-o - edited 1 times]

| | | No, i mean literally seen something. Not off a camera... Anyways, 99% of the orbs is just dust, namely asbestos in UEL's case. If it was orbs, there sure are hundreds of them in the elgin building I'd more trust an orb on video... those are a little harder to explain

| | | Q-tips are nice, I used to cut them in half and store them in a film canister, but when a cop searches you its kinda hard to explain whats in the canister and then why you have a bunch of Q-tips that are cut in half, thank god Im a good bullshiter. Now I just clean my lenses befor I go & keep the caps on them.
