| | | PAWolf has a point I suppose it does depend on what kind of car you drive and how your car might look, which could tip off the cops. Granted in my case not many people under the age of 30 drive an Oldesmobile (Granted it's the small model Alero, with a V6 and it hauls ass) which hasn't ever really broken out of the 'older people' standard of car. Though I know friends which drive imports and also UE, who have never even had the cops stop to look at they're car if it's parked anyplace. I suppose that would also depend on what area your in. Currently living in the hellhole that is Orlando, I doubt the cops would stop to even think twice about much parked anyplace here, which is an advantage due to the tourists. Though is most places I don't really think the cops care that overly much. Probably just run the plates to make sure it isen't stolen and figure 'break-down' of some kind.

| | | I suppose alot of the parking in plain sight also depends how you've parked it. We regularly pull right up beside our target and use their parking lots (always properly parked in the space), and had police drive right past our vehicle, and our vehicle is not inconspicuous - it a purple Toyota RAV4! (look for it - it's in a number of the sites I've put up)

LOL much of what has been posted is right on.... i have found the best places to hide are in plain site... Back when i started ue on my own, i had a 4wd 79 bronco.... it wa a gas guzzler, ugly as sin, and ate gas faster than i could replenish it.... however, i did get away with some stuff by helping the occassional cop out of mud or something similar... 4wd is great, in many cases.... hell the vehicle i just bought is 4wd, but only because i found a 2wd blazer, 4wd jeep, or a 2wd wagon for the same prices.... i took the 4wd with a standard tranny... today i broke it in and did a little storm drin running... (its san antonio, we have loads of open areas), ended up parking under an overpass, and spent a good 4 hours exploring the northcentral side of town underground... here are my tips... 1) rip all the stickers off, except maybe a local "we back the blue" type sticker... 2) park in a well lighted 24 hour store parking lot if possible... 3) if 2 fails, park ona roadside, lock the ar down, and post a note in the window that says something like "this car has run out of gas, will return for it within 12 hours".... and 4) if none of those are an option, drive for the side of the road, brake hard, and leave soe skid marks in the gras.... it will look like the vehicle went out of control, and you can usually get it before the tow truck visits... quite franky i usually just find a parking meter, hotel, apt comple, etc and park there... if all else fail and it is semiremote, try to find a warehouse, if you run into eople at th warehouse leaving or returning to the vehicle, you can just tell them its "acting up" and you are walking to find a gas station, phone home, call for a tow, get advice, etc....

| | | A sign on the windshield that says, "Car broke down, will return in a few hours with tow truck" helps keep car thieves from bothering to hot wire your car and will make them think twice about stealing your brand new 8 track in your Reliant Rabbit (or was that the Weasel ) because they think that even if the car is owned by a woman, most tow truck drivers are Manly men who carry tire irons and the note says you will soon return. Car thieves generally dont like a beating. The cops in PA will put a sticker on a car that shows that they have already checked the broken down car and warns the owner to remove the car in so many days. I assume that most police will give you at least a whole day to remove a car. Also make sure that your car has the proper stickers, i.e. registration, inspection, . You could have a successful UE experience and then get pulled over by a cop who had checked your car out while you were Spee lunking. He's looking for that 3 wheel Rabbit with the expired inspection sticker. Also, cops hate Temp tag plates and Temporary license plates that go on the back windshield as they cannot run the plate (example would be new cars or ones just bought) but remember to cover the VIN number on the dashboard with the sign that reads "Car broke down" so that he cannot punch up the VIN number and see who owns the car.

| | | If you are worried about parking on the side of the road, I suggest, as aaargh did, to throw a bike in your vehicle and park somewhere unassuming near the location, then riding the bike the rest of the way there. You might want to get a cheap bike so if you have to leave it there you won't be too choked. Also, if there are houses or businesses close by, use your judgement where or when you could park there. There is also the option of your team being dropped off, then having somebody waiting or driving around while you are carrying out the mission. Just remember to have some way of contacting the pick up person in a hurry. I think most of time if the police check out a car parked on the side of a rural road they leave it alone if there is nothing wrong with it. If it is towed you could try and recover the tow cost using the excuse you ran out of gas or the spark plugs were shot, and there were no signs prohibiting parking and you were parked in a safe manner. (Just remember to bring a jerry-can or spark plugs with you when you pick it up so your story doesn't fall apart.) [last edit 3/27/2004 10:36 PM by Viper - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by formandfile i hate cars, but thats just me. i think its alot better to be on foot if youre ever chased, as you dont have to worry about the car's ability to further distingish you from everyone else. i pack light and take public transit when possible, although ill admit there are times when thats not possible...
|
That's what I do--take public transportation, or even better, ride my bicycle. Occasionaly I've even been able to bring my bike into whereever it is I'm exploring. You can lock them up anywhere, hide them anywhere, and you can ride them in places inacessable by cars. I realize that the bike option isn't avalable to everybody all of the time, but for me cars are too much of a hassle. --Noah

| | | I have a 1993 Chrysler New Yorker. I usually park right in a parking lot of a store when possible. My car isn't an obvious teen vehicle. So.. no 1 questions me much about anything... although when i get out withmy digital camera.. many people become curious. Although very rarely do i get questioned by anyone. There has been a time or two that someone has asked. I just told 'em i doing it for a thing on my website. Anyway.. back to the car. My car is a plain on Chrysler.. factory everything. No cd player.. nothing. That is the best policy for blending in... not having something that sticks out. As many of you have stated, and a lot of good ideas in this forum. Gave me some ideas, for when i buy another car... thanks.

| | | Ok Im with most everyone else on this, K you want to hide your, car, park it around the side of a convenience store, walk in buy something walk away, cops wont ask the store owner which car is his, they dont see you in the store, wow he ran outta gas, or maybe he is in the bathroom Park at walmart or large stores such as that, they all have large night maintenance crews ~32 employees sometimes~ i know i just got hired at a walmart for nightshift, nobody looks for cars there, and if your there a long time, daylight employees come, night employees gone, and they allow their customers to stay the night in their parking lot apparently which is weird ~the walmart i work on is always full of motorhomes, park a silver tempo between 2 motorhomes nobody blinks twice at it, they think it belongs to one of the motorhomes or a janitor, another idea, side of the road hood up, sounds good, if yer worried about yer car getting jacked, disconnect ONE and only one distributor cable, hotwired vehicles dont like to start with one off, they will run with the keys with one off, As someone else said, cop probably just making sure the car isnt hot, you didnt steal it most cops dont care, if they catch you usually its just a warning etc anyways the first time as long as you have nothing on you to vandalize the site and just kinda tell as much of the truth as possible "Hey man i was just here looking around i swear i didnt break anything, i wont do it again" can quite often times get you out pretty easy, it takes more paperwork then its worth to falsly accuse someone....

| | | Another thing I think might be quite effective is investing in a couple of magnetic "slap on the side or back of your car/truck" business signs. I used to be an independent courier, and we were supplied with 'em. I sorta kept mine after I quit I've never been bothered in the least when I've had "***** Express" on the back of my little p/u. You could decide on a few business names that would provide cover for various locations/parking areas. Hell, even put yer own cell number on the back (if you can set it to vibrate). Let whoever is wondering about your vehicle call you up, and you can explain your "employee's" presence...okay...that might be a bit silly...but you get the idea...
