While I am yet to confirm this, I have heard that there is another partially constructed and abandoned station under King east between Yonge and Church.

They've exagerated a bit...there is no tunnel or partially completed station, just a concrete shell for the station which indeed is buried.

It was the starting point for an East/West running subway line parallel to Bloor/Danforth but further North.

These are the only ones that exist:

http://transit.tor.../subway/5006.shtml

  • Lower Queen
  • Lower Bay
  • Allen station (just a concreted-in area)

The one on King is underneath the King Edward. It was built prior to the construction of the Yonge-University line as it was anticipated that a line would one day run underneath the hotel. When this didn't happen it was suggested that a tunnel be constructed leading to the Yonge line, however this never happened.

I am not sure of the excavated area was filled in, or if it still remains; I suspect it is still there though.

Edited to add:

I don't think that it was the TTC that would have built this station. Instead I suspect it was the King Edward that arranged for it's construction.

From what I remember (note "remember"... I can't verify any of this.) There was never to be a streetcar subway under King, especially as the plans were to have it under Queen. Additionally, as mentioned, this happened before the Yonge line was built. A long time, actually. I think even before the first proposals for underground rapid transit were established for Toronto (1920's?).

Anyway... I remember reading in some Mike Foley book that there was to be a tunnel running from Union to the King Edward for dignitaries and important people and all that. From what I recall, he said it never got built, and even if it did, I think a "station" wouldn't make a lot of sense. For a tunnel that wasn't planned to be used all that frequently, and at that one that would only be around 0.4 km in length, some sort of transit system requiring a station would be a huge waste of money.

Thus I highly doubt it's existence. From what I remember Foley writing, the tunnel was never built, and thus if it DOES exist, it was built in preparation of the tunnel, but would likely be more of a connection room to the hotel than some sort of grand station. Also, since the tunnel was never built, it was likely never finished, and thus if any evidence of this still exists, it would likely be a concrete room currently used for storage.

It's nice to dream, but... sadly I don't think there's anything to this one.

I heard Mike Foley mention the "station" briefly while he spoke on a radio show a while back. I have been searching for information on it, however there is very little out there.

It would be nice to find out if this "station" actually exists; though I don't have any great desire to explore and empty room devoid of any features, which is precisely what I would expect to find.

There are some stairs under a large grate on the north east corner of young and church. Do those stairs lead to the Lower Queen incomplete station or where they meant to at all?

Unlikely, since "upper" Queen is 3-4 blocks west of there. Also since "lower" Queen was never more than just roughed-in, I doubt they would have completed a set of stairs to it, and maintained them for no reason all these years.

(Though -- does anyone know where along Queen St. the streetcar was intended to go underground to stop at "lower" Queen?)

AFAIK most, if not all, of the "lower" Queen space was used up by the pedestrian passage built crossing under the tracks, storage, and what space went to accomodate the Maritime Life (now Manulife) building.

I'm not completely sure, but I think those were the old stairs to Queen Subway Station. When they built the Martime Life Tower, there was no need for them anymore since there is now a modern entrance inside the lobby....

At least that's what I always thought those stairs were.

Are you perhaps thinking of the stairs on the north sidewalk of Queen St. East, just east of Yonge? If so, you are right.

(Edit: The poster asked about Yonge and Church.)

lol, that's what I was thinking. But I do think we got the right grated over Stairway at a north-east corner of Yonge & something that's related to Queen Street.
