| | | So here's a little history to look into, I know of the facilities that used to be on the site have since been destroyed, and the only structure left from this cold war era radar site is now a mushroom warehouse in opisatika (sp?) that used to be the rec center. More info on the actual site are here http://www.pinetreeline.org/site25.html CFS Lowther was decomissioned years ago and the only thing left is the road entry, mostly overgrown with grass, and a small bell canada sign stating there is burried telephone cables. By the photos it appears the the old service tunnels that were left have all collapsed in on each other, but there was an extensive network connecting MSE, MP Station, Mess Hall, Steam Plant, BX, Theater complete with a tunnel and subground security station to prevent unauthoized access to the radome complex itself. This site is between Hearst, Ont and Opisatika on the route to Kapuskasing. Lived there for 4 years as a child and don't remember a lot more, but have actually been in the the old service tunnels (caught with my older brother by the MP's and disciplined sharply by my drill sgt father.)
Also shorthly up the road, there was an old water filled mica quarry with many boarded up old mineshafts and a trail to another smaller quarry up the ridge, complete with it's own shaft (this one at the time was not water filled to my knowledge, but again I was a child and too afraid to go exploring into the deep dark underground. I haven't been out to the site in over 15 years, but I know the quarry was only protected from vehicle access by a gate and simple padlock (if it's not maintained by the base as it was at the time I'd assume someone has already removed that obstacle... Food for thought, and maybe worth another look if I make it to Ontario sometime in the next few years. If anyone has more info plz post to me. It's a nostalgia thing and I'm definately not too afraid to go in now!

Also the old high gain antenna from the base still sites by the CN Museum in Kapuskasing. Hope you like the post
