<Edit - Admittedly, I was wrong about the entire Red Bull thing. The name 'taurine' comes from the fact that it was first discovered in cattle about 40 years ago. Even still, after poking around and actually doing research, it isn't somethign that should be imbibed whenever you want to. Its proper use should be during extreme workouts - and just staying awake isn't an 'extreme workout'. Also, Red Bull does not rehydrate you - due to its rather high caffeine and sugar content, it tends to dehydrate you rather quickly.

So yes, I was wrong. Mark it on your calendars.>

For lots of energy, I'd suggest things like pastas, breads, etc... things with a high carb content (as Crossfire said). Complex carbs take a long time to break down, and give a lot of energy when they do so. Probably your best bet.

when Im eu'ing I tend not to notice anything. There I have been times with I spent 10 hrs at a site. When I was done Id realize that I didnt even notice it was day time or that I hadent eaten in longer then that. The last time I went to a site I spent 5hrs walkin in boots that I hadent worn in a while(and now I rember why) I didnt even realize till I got in the car that my pinky toes were swollen and I had gashes on my ankels, allso that my whole body hurt cuz thats the most walkin i have done in a while.
So my point is I dont think you have to worry about having a ton of energie, just enough to keep you goin. When I go on a over night(or more) I plan on bringing-Plenty Gatoraide(I always bring it) A roast beef hero(or 2 depending on how long i go) And some energie bars.
The reason I would pack so light is cuz most of the places that i would spend thet night, dont actualy have woods or anythingthat I could camp in. If I were able to camp Id probaly bring my lil capmers stove so I could have my coffee and make some ramen noodels or somthing

i hate/have hated/will hate camping... the last time i went camping was labor day weekend 1994. I got talked into going to Kinderhook NY with a kooky friend of mine who was a Bigfoot chaser... I like to refer to it as my weekend in hell.

1st night was ok. we stayed on a backroad in the van and were summarily awakened at 5am by a NY state trooper. We had a .22 and a .30-.30 rifle in the van (which was 1)licensed in PA by a mutual friend, 2)had been borrowed by Rich who had a VT license and me in it who had a NY ID). The trooper gave us back the rifles and the ammunition, but kept the stungun he found under the passenger seat.

2nd night i was in a sleeping bag meant for someone who is 4ft nothing. Me being 6ft tall froze one whole half of my body. At 3am, I awoke to a raccoon staring at me, sitting on my chest. I blinked, it blinked, I blinked again and it took off. Add that to all the superfreaky noises in the woods around us, I didn't sleep at all. That morning, hot air balloons woke us up.

That morning, I'd had quite enough and wanted the security of my own goddamn bed. It's funny how camping brings out the Hannibal Lecter in all of us.

Never again will I sleep in a tent.
Blah.

I laughed... I cried I laughed some more! Thank you Samurai for that. As for animals no matter where I go I end up having those wonderful little animals check me out. If you go and set up a tent stash your food in a tree on a string in something a squirl cant easily tare thourgh. Also dont hang it over your tent or you might have animals trampling you.

<health rant>
From just a standard health perspective, Red Bull and all of the rest of those taurine-based drinks are not healthy at all.
You wanna know where taurine comes from? Bull testicles. That's right folks, you're sucking down pureèd bull testicles. Where do you think they got the name 'taurine' ?
I pity those poor guys who suck down 2 cans of this stuff a day... they're building up the levels of testosterone in their bodies to a point where its dangerous. If they stop drinking it, their bodies will start going into withdrawal-like symptoms. Very BAD!'

Where on EARTH did you get the idea that the chemical tourine had anything to do with testosterone, or that it was extracted from BULLS TESTICALS????

You morons really should read up on these things before you go off talking utter shite like this.

Taurine is a non-essential sulfur-containing amino acid that functions with glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid as a neuroinhibitory transmitter. While taurine does not have a genetic codon and is not incorporated into proteins and enzymes, it does play an important role in bile acid metabolism. Taurine is incorporated into one of the most abundant bile acids, chenodeoxychloic acid where it serves to emulsify dietary lipids in the intestine, promoting digestion.

Unless a bull keeps its liver and gall bladder in its scrotum, I think you'll find that you can't pull this stuff out of a bulls family jewels my friend.

Samurai- I am not here to tell you should try camping again, but I think you just had a bad experience. Camping is all about being prepared, having the right stuff. Not that it gets bogged down in gear though, but at least having a full size sleeping bag rated for the climate you'll be camping, will greatly increase your enjoyment of the experience. Besides would your life be the same without that Raccoon experience? I think not.

to follow on from what asylunt said, and keeping it brief because I have a cat on my lap, above all camping is fun! You should camp because you like the outdoors, and enjoy all the benefits of being so near to the site your exploring.

Taurine is one of the most abundant amino acids in the body. It is found in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle and is very concentrated in the brain and heart. It is synthesized from the amino acids Methionine and Cysteine, in conjunction with vitamin B6. Animal protein is a good source of Taurine, as it is not found in vegetable protein. Vegetarians with an unbalanced protein intake, and therefore deficient in methionine or cysteine may have difficulty manufacturing Taurine. Taurine is present in meats and animal products, but not in plant products. Dietary intake is thought to be more important in women as the female hormone Estradiol depresses the formation of Taurine in the liver.

Taurine functions in electrically active tissues such as the brain and heart to help stabilize cell membranes. Taurine seems to inhibit and modulate neurotransmitters in the brain and helps to stabilize cell membranes. It also has functions in the gallbladder, eyes, and blood vessels and appears to have some antioxidant and detoxifying activity. Taurine aids the movement of potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium in and out of cells and thus helps generate nerve impulses. Zinc seems to support this effect of Taurine. There have been reports on the benefits of Taurine supplementation for epileptics. It has also been found to control motor tics, such as uncontrollable facial twitches. Taurines' effectiveness in epilepsy has been limited by its poor diffusion across the blood-brain barrier.

In Japan, Taurine therapy is used in the treatment of ischemic heart disease. Low Taurine and magnesium levels have been found in patients after heart attacks . Like magnesium, Taurine affects cell membrane electrical excitability by normalizing potassium flow in and out of heart muscle cells. Supplements decrease the tendency to develop potentially lethal abnormal heart arrythmias after heart attacks. People with congestive heart failure have also responded to supplementation with improved cardiac and respiratory function.

Taurine is necessary for the chemical reactions that produce normal vision, and deficiencies are associated with retinal degeneration. Besides protecting the retina, Taurine may help prevent and possibly reverse age-related cataracts. Low levels of Taurine and other sulphur containing amino acids are associated with high blood pressure, and Taurine supplements have been shown to lower blood pressure in some studies.

Other possible uses for Taurine supplementation include eye disease, cirrhosis, depression and male infertility due to low sperm motility and hypertension, and as a supplement for newborns and new mothers. It is maintaining the correct composition of bile and the solubility of cholesterol. It has been found to have an effect on blood sugar levels similar to insulin. Possible symptoms of toxicity include diarrhea and peptic ulcers.

Come on, Crossfire, throw me a bone here. A number of people on the forum are making their living on copyright and other intellectual property. Almost every person here has posted trip stories or photographs that they defend with copyright.

Would you post someone else's photo without at least crediting them?

it wasn't just that... it was the complete and utter unpreparedness of my traveling companion. By the end of the expedition, I was quite ready to murder him with my bare hands.

I'm just not an outdoorsy type person... I usually end up sleeping in my car.

Ben, stop being so vindictive. I knew that the stuff about taurine coming from bull's testicals was a load of rubbish, and I wanted to use something official to prove it, and clearly so did Crossfire.

What's so wrong with bringing the knowlege of others into the attention of people here on the boards? At least we are willing to look these things up, and they help us all learn.

I would've but I couldn't remember what the link was, and just didn't think it was relevant.

I'll admit it wasn't by me, it was just to back up what I was saying.

Anyway Red Bull is designed to help with reaction time and energy release when you need to put action to the reaction. I don't drink it for hydration, I drink it to recieve the benefits it provides.

For staying awake I don't use anything, I just call it a day and go to bed. Seriously walking around a site when your half asleep can be pretty dangerous.

For hydration I would suggest flavoured water, or just plain water.

I knew what I was doing - I was trying to have some fun. I deliberately searched for "What is Taurine" and then copied the whole page and pasted it here. I wasn't attempting to pull something over on anyone, I was only having a little fun at TT's expense.

Sorry if you got the wrong idea, Chainsaw. It wasn't intended in the way you think.

Okay, before this thread is officially locked...
I'll give a bit of history; a view as to why I'm a little different:

So, it was about 1996.
And I was homeless.
There was this abandonded flour mill that all the gutterpunks called home.
I stayed there for two days.
Of course, while they were spraypainting the walls of the third floor (of the eight-story building; the old homeless guys slept on the first floor), and tearing pages out of a Gideon Bible to roll joints, I was working my way into the basement, or up to the roof, or trying to find my way into the grain silos.
The building has since been converted into an apartment complex (I still wonder about the turnover rate, as the place is "haunted," and I saw some really wierd shit around there), but I'm still trying to find my way back in...

...But I've never been the same since.

Okay, back to the thread-ending thing. Intalex; I'd suggest you use the term "latent homosexuality," in some form. That seems to end threads quicker than anything else.

Example: "TT, your choice of overnight equipment is evidence of your ignorance of the site in question, AND IT'S A TESTAMENT TO YOUR LATENT HOMOSEXUALITY!!!"

That'll do.

You should come up with one of those 365-day desk calendars where you provide a daily anecdote to ponder.

I mean seriously, do you have a team of writers coming up with this shit? I can't keep up with you. You have something dimwitted to say in just about every post.

Moving on.

I've always wanted to camp in a cave. Not some party cave where I'd be sharing my space with some drunk high schoolers, but drag a tent a ways through a natural cave and set up shop.
