| | | In a way, that's a tough question. Basically don't dress or act suspiciously or in a way that stands out, don't get in over your head and (despite what many many people here will tell you) don't carry a bunch of gear that will be hard to explain. Be quite, patient, and methodical. Don't rush into things, think them through.

As you said, it's easy. Why are you asking then? Having more trouble than expected with such an easy concept? DSANKTUEUEUEMADURBEXLEETUEUUEUEENINJAmasterdude69 ps. To avoid capture dress as a schoolgirl and sport crotchless painties. Dangle your freshly shaved nuts out the slit, then flash any member of authority if they approach. More successful than first appears.

| | | Look as if you own the place and that you have permission to be there, that way people driving by wont get suspicious, if you have camera's people will take you as an artist and wont think your up to no good. IF you are caught dont run unless you are certain you or everyone in your group can get away that only applies to cops and rent a cops that have the authority to detain you, if its your average rent a cop, run. If its a cop dont mouth off and tell them what your doing and that you dont intend to cause harm.

I wish people wouldn't be so snarky on the rookie forum, after all it was made for questions like this. Rule Number 1: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT run around like a ninja wearing all black or camo. If you actually are a ninja then you can ignore this rule. Rule Number 2: There is a very fine line between "innocently" being somewhere your not supposed to be and being somewhere that will land you in handcuffs. Always be aware of where you are in relation to that line and act accordingly. Rule Number 3: Start small. UE does look easy and for the most part it is but walking into a fully abandoned hospital with hourly patrols is a world away from climbing into a window of an abandoned building on a busy and active high security jail campus. The great part about this hobby is it can be as challenging as you want it to be. Rule Number 4: Trust no one. In New England at least 60% of the information you will hear about abandoned places is either mistaken or wrong on purpose. Do not believe anyone when they tell you something has been demolished or that something is impossible, go see it for your own eyes. Rule Number 5: This is the most important rule, stay vigilante! Most of the arrests or near misses I've heard about all have their genesis in someone making a stupid mistake. Flashlights at night, leaving doors open, parking in an obvious area and making too much noise in a partially active building are all things that are easily avoidable but still claim explorer after explorer.
The world is not nearly as scary as the TV makes it out to be. |

| | | A big one for me is light discipline. Don't got to a location at night and start flashing your light out the windows and all over the place. An abandoned building is supposed to be dark, and the neighbors or police WILL notice your light cannon poking out of every window. Keep you light pointed in a non-attention getting direction, and try to use it sparingly. [last edit 11/7/2006 4:02 PM by Jonsered - edited 1 times]

| | | What about the use of coloured gel filters on flashlights? I think I remember something about either red or blue filters making the beam/light harder to detect from a distance. Any truth?

| | | Red is at the upper end (infrared) of the spectrum of visible light, so it would seem reasonable that it would be harder to detect. Depending on the shade of blue, it would be closer to the lower end fo the spectrum (ultraviolet) and thus more difficult to detect. In practice, I dont' know how well this works.

A great headlamp with an integrated red filter: http://en.petzl.co...oduits?Produit=482 If you want more filters than just red, you can buy the old school Tikka Plus, and get your filter's separately.

| | | It is true that flashlights with a blue filter are harder to see at a distance. I work at my universities student theatre and us Techies all use blue shrouds on our lights, including flashlights, during performances solely because it's less intense and less lightly to be visible though crack in the stage doors or in the tech box. Generally to not get caught you need: 1. Too be smart If its your first time at a place, check it out during the day and just get an idea of the place. 2. Keep group sizes down Lots of people, particularly the inexperienced and stupid, will talk loudly and be very unaware of their surroundings. Explain some ground rules to them before you enter the perimeter of the site. 3. Have a plan As best as you can, know where you're going to enter the building before you actually go. The last thing you want is to be standing in the open looking for a way in. Discuss with your mates what to do if you do get caught, have a place to meet back up if you get split up. 4. Watch out for places where you could be cornered For example, a hall with only 2 ways in and out, you could be trapped by 2 security guards. This has never happened to me, but we always enforce low light and sound rules when moving through areas like this. It probably doesn't matter 99 times out of 100, but i'd rather not get caught. 5. Common Sense Don't ever give the authorities a reason to be particularly bothered about you. For example, don't break stuff on active sites, don't annoy them by underlining the fact that you've got in - if you're on the roof of a building and they shine a search light at you, get down! Getting caught is always a possibility, but all these things will decrease the chances of it happening. Best advice i think anyone can give is: Don't be an idiot: if an idea seems stupid, it probably is.

| | | here's what i do to avoid being caught: 1. Don't put my respirator on until i am in or just about to enter a building 2. Wear casual clothes, usually dark but not too shady. 3. No matter how safe i feel in a building always keep somewhat quiet so as to hear someone entering the building, or someone moving around inside. 4. Always look for alarms (magnetic strips on doors, motion sensors) 5. if i know a building's under construction i limit the time i'm in there as well as when i go.
