How about both at the same time? I wander round and if I see something wort htaking a picture of then I will. Won't stop me sitting down for an hour or so and reading paperwork though.

Some places you just simply can't go back to for a second time. You might not know it at the time though so get as much as you can done in that one trip. It might take all day but so what?

i've stopped taking so many photos as of late, but its entirely a personal thing. In regards to my art i'm trying to get away from the documentation of a location and more into fabricating the experience after experiencing the location. the feeling of exploring is hard to capture, but just plain documenting doesnt cut it

I hate all of you

Yeah, I never really felt any connection to the idea of "documenting" a place.

For me, it's going somewhere and experiencing it. Sometimes there is an amazing thing to see, that is only visible because light is falling a certain way at a particular time of day. Sometimes the amazing thing to see can only be seen when captured as an image with light painting. Sometimes there are scooby-doo mysteries to solve and histories to delve into. Sometimes it's just trying to feel the life and experiences of people who have been there before.

All of that is exploring to me, and the photography, ideally, will help me capture those experiences and feelings. Maybe no one else will "get" why I took the picture, but art comes from putting something in from yourself. Other people might not see the same thing, but they can feel the presence of the inspiration.

And that is holy.

I really don't know why you would split the two up. Some of my best pictures are from road trips where I have literally run through the site to get everything in as quick as possible and move onto the next site.

The only way I can make sense of your statement is to guess that you were only doing photography to impress people. When you realized you couldn't do what other people were doing without learning how to post-process your digital images, you gave up.

If you weren't such a quitter, and had a more honest reason for being put off by digital improvements, you could start some sort of counter-establishment Dogme 07 movement and put out manifestos about producing "honest," "real" photos. It's a shame you'll never give us your best Lars von Trier impression.

Way to be insulting, just because it wasnt for me isnt a reason to be rude.
A question was asked and I gave my opinion, I really wasnt looking for an argument.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

What's wrong with photoshopping a picture once and a while or all the time? It's still art. As long as you do it RIGHT and it's appealing to the eye, meh, who cares. Everything in this world has evolved. Where would we be without progress and new ideas?

And as for not photoshopping, that's cool too. I'm down with ANY FORM OF ART!!!

How about you?

It's hard to set up the perfect shot when the cops let the dogs loose on you. Or when the last 4 cameras you owned all died by falling in poop.

i find that if you take a separate trip for strictly exploring and seeing all that you can see, you will be able to take the time to explore every square inch of a place and search through files and cabinets and tunnels anything you can. taking pictures kind of takes away from that because being more focused on pictures makes you tend to have less interested in seeing everything, but more on getting that perfect shot. thats just my personal opinion though, some people may be able to do both. who knows

While i like to take pictures, i too very often find myself instead just rummaging through stuff. I can usually do both if i manage my time more effectively. Like getting to a location early enough and only spending so much time in each room etc...

As I am an awful, just terrible photographer, I really enjoy the exploring.

That is not to say though that I don't appreciate all the lovely pictures on this site. I just don't have the aptitude to take pictures like that myself.

Meh, nothing wrong with photoshopping. Sometimes you can create a whole new perspective and world by a little bit of photoshopping.

Some are in this just for the photography. Fair play to them really as that is what they want to do and they might not like using Photoshop.

I take my pics to put across to others the way I see these wonderful places. I would photoshop every single image if it gave the image a certain mood or look I am looking for.

That's a tricky question...I think taking picture while exploring has two goals that are quite distinct. The first goal is, as said before, to "document" the place - for others to see, or as a support for memory. The second is a lot more difficult : it's capturing the place's atmosphere, making the viewer feel the same emotion that the explorer.

Taking the first kind of pics is easily done, depending on where you are. The second kind...is harder, more time-consuming, and requires a lot more hardware (as said before : tripod, light sources, a good photo camera) ; worse still, this hardware is often fragile. I wouldn't go crawling in vent shafts with a $500 photo camera

So for me it's explore first, then come back with a good camera.

I like to explore the place while taking pics to document it. I havent until recently became interested in the more artistic and well taken photographs so almost all of mine are just to capture the place on film. I am do plan on making a trip purely for photography next time as I have explored the place out.

So first exploration and photos, then the hardcore photography later.

I like to balance the two. Preferably with someone else who can do some, or most of the photography sometimes. (As I have a habit of 'Exploring' often in a rough, and tumble manner.)

Good advertising IS art... and good respectable art.

Bad advertising is the lowest form of communication possible. That's why I go to those 'Best ads of the year from around the world film festivals'. Amazing stuff.

And why I don't have cable, to avoid Huggies commercials while watching Goldfinger
