| | | I love that place. I have done all of the research I possibly can. It is a true gem if you know the history.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. |

| | | Hi All, I have visited this place a couple of times, and was able to go inside for a detailed exploration a couple years back. I have posted a bunch of images on my blog which can be found here... http://www.bronx-terminal.com/?p=541 Follow the links on the page to the posts and check out the PDF's of the proposals for the site.
Its a great place if you can get inside. The current owner, Lawrence Ryan is usually there on the weekends and is quite friendly. More than once he invited me in for a tour. Be aware, the place is closely watched by rent-a-cops who I would not put it past to smash a camera or worse. They are real goons! The location of the shops is also right across the street from the local police station. Tim Warris

| | | Its funny, everyday I come home from Stratford from seeing my friend, somebody posts about the shops. I went by for fun yesterday and drove around it, neat place. The front roof looks sketchy, like its about to fall in.

| | | I think parts of it *did* fall in... which is why it's in the state it is now.

| | | It looked really bad. I've never even looked out front to see the old turn table, just went around back. The engine in the yard is always in worse shape when I return each time. Who ever made up the website did a good job, I liked the pictures.

| | | The locomotive looks to be an old GP-9, U.S. built according to the builders plate in the photos. I go by it all the time, but I'm usually on the other side of the yard and hadn't noticed it. Something for my next visit! Eugene

| | | GEXR (Goderich-Exeter Railway) 177 (Titania) is a GP9 and was built by GMD in London, Ontario, in May of 1960. 177 was acquired by GEXR in 1992. GEXR 177 is ex-MMRR 177; exx-IW 177; exxx-Cartier 51; nee-Cartier 1. Oh, and the serial number is A1814. I'm such a geek

| | | Heh, no problem. Same shit different factory! The La Grange plant labels units as EMD, and the London plant labels them as GMD. But they're both under the EMD family... Currently most final assembly is done at London. La Grange still functions for Research and Development, and parts construction. A small amount of final assembly is done in Mexico, but I'm not familiar with the plant. An outsourced plant in St Catherines, Ontario also does work... mostly on export units heading overseas. As you are probably aware, General Motors no longer owns EMD. Rumors are around, speculating that the Greenbriar Equity Group LLC and Berkshire Partners LLC, the purchasers of the division from GM, are already ready to sell again. Who knows... I just hope the London plant continues to operate.

| | | Heh I was going to respond with "meh, same thing really" but you just can't say that anymore. Man, things were a lot less confusing when EMD was doing good. You know... still owned by GM.

| | | EMD started to suffer long before GM sold it off... Apparently it's finally turning a nice profit again, and some of the problems with the units are getting ironed out. Unfortunately, it seems the export units are now below par... From what I understand, the current owners of EMD are attempting to turn the company from a losing venture into a profitable and attractive company, that other organizations would be interested in buying. Kinda like buying a shitty house, fixing it up, and selling for a much higher price. As for the unit designation, it's pretty much the same thing... just depends on if you're interested in whether it's Canadian, American, or Mexican built. BTW, Stewie, I'm going to McMaster in the fall... you wanna show me the Hamilton ropes ?

| | | A quote from a daily digest of local railroad news that I receive via email:
... regarding the Stratford Shops. The city dragged the owner Mr Ryan into court the other day. He's faced with numerous fines, plus failing to pay necessary taxes AND he's now residing in jail for the next four months ! Rumours have it...the City will have the facility dumped back into their lap - just before the building collapses from absolute neglect...stay tuned... |
I will stay tuned and report more info if I come across it.
