Social Engineering Tips

I know how to talk people any to almost any thing.
It's a skill a have needed a lot working at a summer camp.
you have to know how to make people happy, so i know how to make people think what you want them to do is what they want to do.
Makes life a lot easyer.

So here are some tips of getting people to trust you and do what you ask.

Be calm: look like you belong there.
If you look like you are trying to get out of talking as fast as you can people will see there is some thing wrong, so be calm and cool.

Know your mark: Know your target. Know exactly how they will react before they do.
When trying to get some thing they don’t want to get you it is best to talk them into thinking that they want to give it to you.
So know what they will ask and know you need to say, this helps more then any thing.

Let the woman do the talking: If you have a woman on your team let her talk for you.
Women are much more trusted so they don’t have to work as hard to get what they want.

People are stupid: They will think what you want them to think, you just have make it sound right.

Have a story: if they ask know what to tell, this is the most important thing I can say!
The first time you have to stop and think about it is when you lose them. Know what you need to say to any thing!

A Team: having people to back up your is a HUGE help. So for your own safety and for more fun have a team.

So there you have it, so good tips to help you out if you ever need to talk your way out of some thing.

If you have any more post them!

Well as sad as it is, image is also very important. Being clean shaven and looking sharp is also key. If you got a team with a few long-haired, artsy freaks make them carry the camera gear, no offense, I use to be one of those long-haired artsy freaks myself, but professional minded people will more than likely forgive a freak for being a photographer or whatnot. I use to get harassed by cops all the time for having long hair and wearing ripped up jeans and basically looking like a grunge musician, but once I started to go bald and I cut my hair short, and I somewhat(not completely ) got out of the nineties fashion scheme, it was like instantaneous respect. I find it sad that people, jobs, and etc. will still judge people on their appearence, but it is something I can't control, so in some situtations it's better to adapt than fight the good fight.
And to repeat what was said earlier, be knowledgable on whatever your talking about. Make it your specialty, go to the library or hop on the net and do some research, heck it never hurts to learn about things.

Oh yes I forgot about look.
Sense I am covered in crap when ever I need to talk to people (You don't want to know what me job is) I never even think about that...
But ya look the part is a good tip!

And to people reading this, really work on SE skills, they will save your but more then you think.
If you know how to talk past people you can get into and out of almost any thing.

If you are really good you can talk your way past check points (I have seen it done) or make people think that you work at the place or any thing.
As people have said "people are sheep"

P.S. I don't know if I can talk about this, but I know some good tips of getting passcards and stuff is you can get deeper into places.
So if a mod says it's ok I will tell you.
My grappa was a spy in the WW2 (Really he has shown me a lot of leet tricks!)

don't look at the floor- they think you're lying.
don't look up- they think you're being a smartass.
always maintain eye contact- this is somewhat intimidating, but it conveys that you might be on the level.
don't fidget.
lose the "um's"
No big hand gestures- makes you look nervous
don't get excited- your adrenaline is going at being caught/approached. RELAX. If you are going to lie, believe in the lie and make it believable. I know people that have beaten lie detectors doing this technique.

Above all, be polite.

i have used most of these at some point or another with varying degrees of success.

I've heard that people like to hear their own name, so one technique to make someone subconciencely happy is to ask their name then use it in every reply. Like "Nice to meet you Bob, So what are you up to Bob, we're just out exploring Bob, Is there a problem with that Bob? etc, etc,. Just what I've heard anyways.

Are you sure? Have you ever had someone do try this with you? Bad salesmen use this technique, and I can tell, it's downright annoying! It might work for some, but for others it's a very fast way to get in their bad books, something you don't want happening if you're trying to talk you way out of or into something.

I tried this out one day-everyone with a nametag I refered to by their name:
Deli counter- "can I help you?" "yes Bill, I would like a half pound of smoked turkey" "this one?" "yes Bill" "here you go, anything else?" "No thanks Bill, have a great day"

and so on with everyone I encountered and I must say most people were puzzled, annoyed or had someones else's nametag on.

Like I said, "that's what i've heard". I agree with you though. Everytime a stranger speaks to me using my name I feel kind of uncomfortable, like, "do I know you or something?".

Yeah, it makes you feel odd sometimes, but maybe thats part of it ? If you're busy thinking about how annoying it is that someone keeps calling you by name, you may not be thinking about what the real issue is... such as why the person was here in the first place ?

actually, there is a fine line to the name thing...
"I'm sorry, my name is... and yours?"
puts your mark offguard, and 9 out of 10 times, they'll give you their name and you can tailor the conversation to the siutation. This hard to teach someone. Either you have it or you don't.

When we worked at I.P., I.P. is a union shop and we were a crew of non-union telcom guys contracted out to install a telecom system. Luckily, my dad worked there as did a couple of relatives and friends' parents. I was out in charge of social engineering everytime we went into a new area. Schmooze was more like it... name drop, get to know, hold hands. Whatever it took to make the job go easier. Almost always it worked.

Also, if you have a story don’t make it to complicated and don’t give more information than was asked. They’ll start to get suspicious if you start jabbering on and it’s easier to contradict yourself and to add something that you might not be able to proove if asked.

Everyone here seems to be thinking of social engineering as a way to get out of a tight spot. Remember, you can also talk your way into places that would otherwise be too difficult or dangerous (ie. active military bases) or activities that would otherwise be prohibitted (unrestricted permission to take pictures on an active military base). Alot of the techniques discussed here will work to get out, but getting in needs more polish and patience.

Well as I said my grappa was a spy and has shown me a lot of ways to get in unseen or how to find ID and make passcards of places.
But I can't talk about that on this place, maybe over AIM.

I don't know if these have been mentioned before but when the police interrogate you, they look for specific things to detect lies.

I can't recall everything at the moment, but it's important to always maintain eye contact (I think there's also a direction where your eyes will shift when you're lying... uncertain about that), and never touch your face with your hands, not even to scratch your nose or whatever.
