Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

Light-Emitting Diodes are small plastic devices, usually with two leads (wires). They are commonly found in almost every piece of electronic equipment nowadays.

This article is to provide information about LEDs in something that matters to UE: Flashlights.

Traditionally, flashlights operated with standard tungsten filament bulbs. More recent innovation has created bulbs with xenon and krypton gas, for a brighter light with longer burn time and less battery usage. However, none of these technologies is quite near LEDs.

LEDs are self-contained units; they are immune to vibration or shock damage (to an extent, unlike bulbs). While one LED by itself may not be very bright, a larger bank of LEDs can be combined to provide equivalent light to a bulb, at much lower power usage. LEDs generatate very little heat, so energy is not wasted.

Recently, some companies have begun using Luxeon Star LEDs for their lights (Surefire, Arc to name a couple). These lights combine some of the advantages of LEDs (higher efficiency, less vulnerable to shock damage) with the advantages of bulbs (light output approaching that of xenon bulbs). Unfortunately, this makes them considerably more expensive.

Other similar products may exist, but this is the only brand I am aware of. More information is available on their site:

An LED keychain flashlight, like the Inova Microlight, can be a very handy thing to have, either as a backup or as an inconspicuous light source.
