| | | Digital cameras are often used by explorers. Digital cameras are good for UE because you can store hundred's of pictures on them, they are usually built very solid, you have the ability to review and discard pictures and in most cases they are very compact. How do digital Cameras work? Digital cameras work somewhat the same as Film cameras except instead of film, the CCD is charged up and gets ready for the picture to be taken. Light enters the camera but instead of exposing the film as in 35mm cameras, it strikes the CCD. Image is kept temporarily in an internal memory called the buffer and then compressed to JPEG or RAW format and then stored on the memory card. What do some of the common digital camera terms mean? Sensor(CCD/CMOS): The sensor is the chip (CCD or CMOS) which records light falling on it, in the digital camera. It is the device which actually captures "the picture" (a digital camera's film). LCD: The LCD of a digital camera is the screen used to review, preview and even act as a large size viewfinder. Aperture: The amount of light that enters a camera. Shutter Speed: The shutter speed is the length of time the "shutter" which covers the CCD allows light onto the CCD. AF assist Lamp: Some manufacturers fit their cameras with a lamp which is used to illuminate the focus subject in low light. Storage Card: The storage card in a digital camera is it's film, it's the removable storage device which holds images taken with the camera What kind of camera should I get? well that depends on your preference. what do you need a camera for? If you just want a camera for Point and Shoot photography you could try: Canon S45 Canon A300 Fuji Finpix F700 Nikon Coolpix 3100 If you want to put some time into your pictures with semi-manual controls then these could be for you: Canon Powershot A80 Nikon Coolpix 5700 Canon G3/5 Minolta DiMAGE Z1 Sony DSC-F717 and if you are a professional photographer and need full manual controls: Sony DSC-F828 Canon EOS Rebel Series Nikon D2H Minolta DiMAGE A1 Fujifilm FinePix S7000 Hope this helps. Almost every digital camera today can record some kind of movie, many even have microphones and speakers, you'd just need a couple of big memory cards to take a long movie (by the way, often you can find much better prices for memory cards online) [last edit 1/21/2004 8:06 PM by punkboy_jerm - edited 3 times]
