Highway 7 and 407 <the eastern part of the 407> Abandonment after Abandonment

So I took this long 50km bike ride from whitby to Richmond Hill and after passing the 407 and entering a town like area I noticed that EVERY house was abandoned and had a government "NO TRESPASSING" sign on it.. I, after riding on a hot day and in serious need of liquid refreshment, was in no mood to do some exploration at the moment until I saw this place here.. Then it was off the bike and bust out the Digi..

heres one of the sign

and the rest of the building

so really theres a bunch of these and they are sitting abandoned at Highway 7 and the eastern part of the 407

anyone know the story behind them?

Welcome to the Pickering Airport Lands. The building in question is in the lovely Pickering hamlet of Brougham. Located at the easterly end of Hwy 407, the town is slowly being turned into a ghost town in advance of the creating of an airport that may never get built. Just recently the local hardware store shut down after a long service to the community. It really is sad how much is being needlessly bought up by the feds and abandoned in these lands. The feds are supposed to maintain these newly vacant properties but in reality they just let them rot and decay. When IanK1968 and I visited the building in your pics a while back, we assumed it was totally vacant and were scouting the perimeter when a tenant in the basement turned a light on. Now that the feds have put up their trademark sign it's a safe bet to assume it's fully vacant now.

well so your right.. hrmm I even posted in one of those threads.. Of course this was like months ago so it has slipped my mind already..

hmmm..

Airport.

Figures.

This would also explain all of the pics of airplanes with a line thru them diagonally.

Why do they need an Airport? Theres an Airport at highway 7 and 404.. thats like only a 15 minute drive from there.. and its next to 2 friking highways..

wtf?!

Well, the idea is to make a larger style airport (big jets, international flights). But yes, there's perfectly good airports in Markham (404/7) and Oshawa (Taunton/Thornton). An airport in Pickering will come as a nasty reality to the throngs of people who just bought $450K homes near Duffins Creek and Claremont. Plus the wild animals (deer, etc) that use that patch of greenspace as a nature highway from the lake to points north will now have to find a way around the airport. A nasty secret of Pearson is the number of animals big and small killed on the runway because these animals can't find a natural route around the airport. Plus the fact there simply isn't any road infrastructure in the east GTA to support the traffic an airport of this size would generate.

Can you say Mirabel?

I've seen the plan for the Pickering Lands Airport and from what I can tell it would pretty easy to create the right transportation infrastructure. But Mirabel was a whole different animal that had bad ideas right from the start. At least GTAA is taking their sweet time with thinking about this and buying land while its easy to do while its cheap.

Though I think it would be smarter to move some transborder flights to Hamilton.

This makes me think that the NFTA needs to speed up the building process of the new terminal at the Niagara Falls International Airport. They're currently doing runway improvements, but that's not going to mean jack if we don't get flights coming in.

I've heard an interesting rumour that one odd airline that flys out of Toronto City Centre Airport (Duck Air...Quack Air...I can't remember the name) wants to possibly start an air shuttle between there and somewhere in Western NY if they can have Customs (And US preclearence) there for it to work.

Well, I doubt that it would be Buffalo, so Niagara and Rochester are likely locations.

Really, you mean all the people to stupid to look and see that the Lands have been set aside as Airport Lands up there well before the developers they bought homes from moved in and developed???

I have no sympathy for anyone not smart enough to do a little bit of research into a community and surrounding land uses when they are buying homes.
