| | | Acronym short for Family Radio Service. In the United States the Federal Communication Commission has allocated 14 frequencies from 462.5625 to 467.7125 mHz for use by anyone for any reason. Power is limited to .5 watt and maximum normal range is usually about 2 miles although practical range is usually much less. FRS has quickly grown in popularity and because of that, radios are readily available at prices ranging from $20 to $100 at pretty much any store that has any kind of electronics section. These radios are very useful in UEing for obvious reasons. do not confuse FRS with GMRS (general mobile radio service) which can operate on some of the same frequencies as FRS, but at a higher power level. You must have a license to use GMRS frequencies. It costs something like $75 per year and is good for you and your immediate family. FRS actually has 14 UHF Frequencies that are legal to use anywhere in North America. They are: 1 462.5625 2 462.5875 3 462.6125 4 462.6375 5 462.6625 6 462.6875 7 462.7125 8 467.5625 9 467.5875 10 467.6125 11 467.6375 12 467.6625 13 467.6875 14 467.7125 Basically, the rules are the same: -500mW (Half a watt) RF output -2.5kHz Max of Deviation -Fixed antenna (you can't remove it) -Radio must be type-accepted as an FRS -No connection to the PSTN (Phone Network) [last edit 1/20/2004 6:32 PM by Avatar-X - edited 2 times]
