These locations can often be dangerous, plagued by rotting floors, broken glass, rusty metal or asbestos. Precautions must be taken. A property can be deemed abandoned if it has been deserted or otherwise entirely foresaken by those who would put the location to legitimate use; this does not include squatters, junkies, or bums. Unfortunately, abandoned locations are prime targets for vandals or arsonists. There is a handful of hints one can look out for when searching for abandoned buildings: Boarded-up or broken windows. Lots of graffiti. If scouting at night, any building that seems empty and is totally dark. Open windows in the middle of a freezing winter. Overgrown lawn. Missing doors. Decaying paint. Etc... On the flip side, some signs that the building you're investigating may not be abandoned: Light/electricity. Smoke coming from a chimney or smokestack. AC units dripping water (during summer).
