| | Abandoned Gas Station < on 8/6/2007 6:09 PM >
| | | Abandoned gas station in Burlington, Ontario. I haven't checked it out yet, but it's been abandoned for about a year now. If you decide to check it out, go at night because it's located on a busy street (Hwy5/Dundas st. between Guelph Line intersection and 407).

| | | There's also an abandoned gas station/service centre off the 401 around Hurontario or Mississauga Road. The exit ramps have been blocked off (only with pylons). I was going to check it out last weekend...but there was a security guard trolling the grounds.

The gas station won't be the interesting part....there's a building on the same property that went down at the same time. It housed a Tim Hortons, Wendy's, big convenience store and some never used conference rooms. The whole place cleared out a year ago, but i've never found an access point T

| | | Pre-internet sales, this 401 station used to be the best place to get concert tickets because few people knew it had a ticketmaster outlet. You can get to it by the road to the south of it (Argentia? I forget).

| | | Yup, it's Argentia Rd. But oddly enough, I couldn't find an entrance to the service station from from that side (not even one that's been blocked off). The place is surrounded by a chainlink fence.

It's on the south side of the 401 (eastbound) and on the north side of Argentia Road, between Winston Churchill and Mississauga Road/Erin Mills Parkway. It didn't offer any facilities for 18-wheelers. It catered to the "business traveler" with Internet access at $5.00 a minute, and the gas prices were always 10-20% higher than other gas stations in the area. Good riddance!
As I went walking, I saw a sign there, And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.” But on the other side it didn’t say nothing, That side was made for you and me. - Woody Guthrie, "This Land Is Your Land" |

| | | Just for information's sake, why did it close? (Was it those higher gas prices?) I first found out about this back in the spring, when I noticed that the "Next Service Centre" sign on the 401 near Cambridge now said 180 km instead of 60-ish. I had figured the place had closed, and this is confirmation. But why? The place was relatively new -- I think it was only built in the early nineties, making it about thirty years younger than the other service centres, although to be fair, the other ones have been completely rebuilt in the past ten or fifteen years. | | | There was a gas station and abandoned house right next to it near my place. Station got demoed and the house sat for years before they could demo it. You see, the gas station had a leak in a tank, and it had seeped into the ground and gotten into the house. Yay gas fumes! And with all that flamableness in the ground they had to wait for years before tearing the house down, because one spark while tearing out the foundation would have made a rather explosive mess. I didnt go in the house. Across the road from the fire hall AND full of deadly gass fumes...lister is enough near firehallness and lungbadness for me. Not worth it for a little house.

If I remember correctly, MTO didn't renew the lease because they wanted to close all such stations within the GTA.

| | | I work beside it so checked it out today. It had has some random tagging, and looks like some minor glass damage (for those who remember the outer wall was all glass). It does look like its been run down for the last 2-3 years thou, but i dont think anyone has been inside. Im assuming that its remaining undeveloped for the last year because of the gas storage over the last 10 years?

Which is wierd because the whole area has gotten a huge industrial/retail boost in the last 5 years and that land would be worth a pretty penny

Probably holding it for sale to a developer so the retail/commercial/industrial thats surronding it can expand?

| | | I use to go to that service station every weekend between 2000-2204. I use to love the Mr. Sub. Over the years the Mr. Sub and Baskin Robins closed and was turn into a game room. I believe towards the end only the Wendy's was left. It didn't serve the 18 wheelers. I always taught it was odd how it was on the boarder of a major city. Most of the Service stations that I have seen are in the middle of no where. The gas was always 20 cents more then other gas stations. I'm sad to see its gone.
