Hi,

Canadain Tire has MAG lights on sale this week...20% off

Both the 2C and 2D are within a dollar of each otrher in price about 24 dollers.

Any preference?

In case anyone's interested, I current own 3 Mini MAG lights; a single AAA I carry on my key chain, a double AAA I received as a promotion and a double AA I carry all the time. I'm trying to round out my set.

4D is what I carry, but thats because I want it to function as a weapon as well as a light. If its not gonna be a skull cracker, it might as well be portable.. I saw go with the c-cells.

I say get the D-cell one. If it's a 2-cell light, then it will be portable enough either way (I use a 2C myself). The D's will give you a little brighter light, and a little longer battery time, at the cost of some added weight. The weight difference is pretty negligible though I'd say.

So there I was, in this creepy old hallway...

I find the D-cell mags much easier to hold than the C-cell ones, but I have bad carpal tunnel, some nerve damage, and a little bit of arthritis. I also like the balance of the 2D better.

Hmm... 2-D, or not 2-D... That is the question...

I'd go with D, because bigger is usually better, especially for 0wnz0ring chuds.

I'm going to go for the C-cell light. It's smaller, which I like, and can still fit the colour filters made for the D-cell light. I'm also going to try to fashion a filter for my 2AA Maglite as well.

They do make filters for the 2AA mags, you know; red and blue. Part of the accessory pack, with the lanyard, filter-holder/anti-roll device, and pocket clip. Should be able to get it for less than $15 CAD.

I vote D cell. It's all about the D's baby. Throw on an IR filter, and a good set of NVG's and your good to go. But I'd advise staying away from maglite. I think their products are crap and hype. There are much better lights on the market.

I think you're right about Maglites being hyped - I'm interested in what these better lights are, though. What products would you suggest?

I have had a cheap Lumilite 2D light for about 6 years, complete rubberized shell and decent o-rings. I have only replaced batteries on it unlike my maglites which keep needing new bulbs or adjustments to the contacts etc.

So, let me see if I have this straight. You're suggesting that the original poster, who is pleased that he can get a maglite on sale for $24, should add an IR filter and use it with night vision goggles? Perhaps your local walmart offers better deals than mine on night vision equipment, but that seems a tad unrealistic of a suggestion.

There ARE plenty of good lights out there. Check a police/EMS supply catalog like gall's, just to get an idea on the huge variety available in the world of high quality flashlights. Or check a caving store to get a glimpse at the world of head lamps. But for 90% of us, a maglite is cheap, easy to obtain, and sufficient for our needs.

I compromised...

I was going to get a 2D MAG, but I couldn't find one in black. I picked up a 3D in black $23.99 plus tax.

I'm happy!

If anyone is interested, rei.com has some good numbers on light output, battery life, dimensions + weights, for maglites.

Funny, I use a system like that when I'm out 4 wheeling. Works incredibly well. The Jazz™ portable power supply 350 series works great.

As for mag lites being hype, I guess they are. As for being crap, far from it. There's a few comparable lights on the market, but nothing beats a good mag lite. Here's a mod to consider doing to your mag lites:

Great burn time with a setup like this.
