New to UER. Houses at Yonge & Finch

Hey. I'm new to the UER site, but have been UEing for years. I've often wished there was a database for sites, and sharing info on them, and over the years I have browsed other forums and infiltration.org, but somehow always failed to notice the link to UER! Then a friend tipped me off -- shocked that I didn't already know about it, and well, here I am. Here's my first post:

I don't know if this location is worth noting in the DB -- since it's destiny is short-lived, or perhaps it's already there at an advanced level; but for anyone who's going to be in the Yonge/Finch area (Church Avenue, at Yonge, near the ESSO) in the next little bit, this collection of houses that's slated to be bulldozed for another condo project is interesting, and comprises of about 10 houses, all easily accessible. Since it's fenced for the last 6-8 months by a wood wall, once you're on the inside, it's pretty much a free-for-all, and no one's going to notice you.

As I figure out the UER, I'll post more sites. Some in town, and others that are quite rural. Um, so in the meantime, just want to say it's awesome to have access to a community and resource like this, and from reading other posts, for the most part, it seems like everyone here is much like myself, respectful of safety and the sites, smart about how they go about it, and loves the thrill of going where most people won't! Thanks!

Doors Open Toronto is this weekend? Oh, naw, I was there last weekend.

Thank you for the valuable service you've done all us in posting these fabulously interesting exteriors. I ride past these houses every day on the bus and I've always wanted to know what their backyards looked like. Thank you so much.

Also, the shot with you or a friend on the front lawn, with their face blurred out, was particularly poignant. You should submit it for the UER Calendar.

Haha, don't listen to kowalski (no one does already). Welcome to the site, PoeFXTC. Definitely post the interiors. And yeah, do your own thing and don't let guys like kowalski mock you (he's stuck riding transit after all, no wonder he's got all that pent up rage). *chortle*

Stuck? I love riding transit. And exploring the yards of boarded up houses. If only I'd gotten there first!

you and fedge should go on a date :p (fedge loves houses)

as for the exterior shots, yes there are blocks and blocks of houses around yonge and finch that are slated to be turned into highrise window boxes I mean condos.

As for the interiors, well the condo developers usually do a decent enough job boarding up these houses that us honest UE's should not be able to get in. Since theres an abudance of houses I dont think the young vandals are too interested in getting in them.

Theres even more on the south east quadrant of Y&F and some by the park between Sen Lac and Yonge.

As for kowalski, I wont lie I did get a chuckle out of his comment. In any case most of these people are just e-thugs. There all camera jockey nerds at meets.

Actually I'm fairly sure this set of houses will be replaced with luxury townes, like the ones on the other side of the street, opposite Edithvale Park. It wouldn't surprise me if a height limit on redevelopment kicks in west of Lorraine Drive.

I'm sure theres side breezeways to be explored still! The fun doesn't stop at the backyard.

Well, we all have to start somewhere. I remember one of my first "explorations" involved some old foundations alongside the QEW in Etobicoke. There's nothing that says this stuff has to involve mind-blowing stuff. You can learn just as much about a city's growth and history using a row of abandoned houses as you can with something more grandiose like a power plant. I probably just wouldn't bother posting pictures of the houses.

ALthough I'm not a big fan of houses, I used to know someone who lived on this street, a very long time ago.

.

If something's actually being learned here, I say "More power! 110% on the reactor! You arrogant fool, you've killed us, not him!"

Unfortunately, that If is a bit larger than the characters that encode it.

Great start! I'm always interested in what comes down for a new development project. This doesn't seem like an area that people will miss all that much, especially 30 years from now.

My city of Lexington demoed brick warehouses and other "derelict" downtown buildings as part of urban renewal in the 1970s. Today, that same property is highly desired for downtown redevelopment, and the urban renewal of the past was called one of the worst mistakes in the city's history. Those same warehouses and buildings could have been converted into lofts and condos...

But I don't see the same feeling here.

Yeah, the houses in this thread are not urban renewal writ large, this is a case of low-key densification with 6-10 old bungalows along a major arterial road as its victims. Completely different scale and social economics.

If we want to talk about major development projects in Toronto, we need to head downtown, to Liberty Village and to the covert plans currently gathering steam to remake a huge swath of Queen West as entirely new condo buildings (not just the projects in the recent court ruling re: the OMB -- there are actually a lot more in the pipeline behind them).

By any chance, is this near a metro stop? I am doing a study on Arlington, Virginia's development patterns, and if you compare aerials taken in the 1960s, 1980s, 1990s, and today, you can see the evolution of a city on a grand scale. To be more specific:

* Post World War II suburbanization, including the demolition of many buildings for suburban fast food eateries, gasoline stations, and the like. (1960s)
* Decline in suburban commercial strip fringes. (1980s)
* Decline in residential pockets. (1990s)
* Demolition of many commercial strips and low-density residential areas for high-rise residential condominiums, office towers, and mixed-use projects, with pedestrian-scaled activities. (today)

Many of these new developments are along the Washington D.C. metropolitan Metro line, which you can clearly see in an aerial.

kowalski, backyards ain't that bad... one of those houses had some pretty Rhododendrons that were slated for demolition, too. And guess who's backyard has those Rhododendrons, now?

But really. The main reason why I bothered posting this location is that it probably won't be there too much longer, so for anyone who's looking for a date place on a Saturday night, hey, it's no fancy restaurant, but it's a bit more fun than mini-putt, it's an option.

Didn't take many interior pics at that location... low on battery power so I didn't get a snap of the Joy Division & Blur posters, the suicidal love poems on the walls, or a snap of "Fant-asian-sy" on VHS, but here's a couple, turns out a family was still living in one of the houses:

Surprisingly, the good folks at Pemberton Group -- the developers -- haven't bothered to board up the houses too tightly. *Ahem* Particularly, the basement windows I found to be drafty. Damn local kids.
