Camcorders come in a variety of sizes and media formats. VHS: Large, clunky analog cameras. VHS-C: A compact tape that can be played in VHS VCRs using an adaptor. 8mm: Small analog tape. Hi8: A higher-quality version of 8mm analog. DV8: Sony digital camcorder using 8mm tapes. MiniDV: Small digital tape, 6mm wide. DVD: Uses 6 cm recordable or rewritable DVDs. Betacam SP: Large professional camera used by news crews. Some camcorders have an IR illuminator that allows for taking black-and-white video in complete darkness. This can be useful for improvised night vision as well as for recording. Certain camcorders also have low-light modes that can record in color. Editing fucntions (crossfade, etc.) may be available. If the camcorder has an external microphone jack, highly directional "shotgun" and parabolic mikes can be used. A parabolic mike, especially, can pick up sounds from far away; for example, they are used to pick up the referees' statements during football games. Digital camcorders usually have an IEEE 1394 (aka "FireWire" or "iLink") interface that allows direct transfer of digital video to a computer for editing and encoding to MPEG-1 (VCD), MPEG-2 (DVD, SVCD), or "web-friendly" formats like MPEG-4, DivX, RealVideo, WMA, etc. A few camcorders are capable of shooting in MPEG; the DVD cameras do this as a matter of course. An analog video capture card can be used for transferring analog camcorder video footage to your computer. Battery life can be a problem. Spare batteries can be very handy.
