| | | Storm Drain maps??? < on 1/9/2004 4:41 AM >
| | | Hey, does anybody know how to get ahold of storm drain maps, like, what City dept. would I ask? Are they part of the public record that anybody can request to see? I was thinking I'd whip up a story about a college ecology class assignment on water quality!!! But I need to know who to tell it to and if they would even have maps of the system, especially the entrances. I can only find one in my town.

| | | One of the best things about being a student is it gives you a cover to ask for data like this. 'urban planning' is a good cover too. - try the public works department; - university libraries often have this stuff

| | | Here's what we did: I had a guy who was great at social engineering call the department (I think Streets. It'll be streets or Drainage or Utilities or something). He said he was from "Bates Brothers Contracting" or some such shit. My part was the young student working as a courrier for extra cash. He got them to make us the copy over the phone, and I went in to pick it up the next day. Since I'm so clumsy at talking to people I practiced my line the whole drive: "Hi, I'm here to pick up a package for Bates Brothers." . Worked very well. If you live in a bigger city, just tell them is part of the Public Information Act and they gotta give you the info. The case for making up a story is that they can refuse to give you the information if they have a good reason to think you might do something damaging with it.
"It's funnier that way." |
