Extremely hot, pressurized steam is sent from the steam plant, through a network of pipes, to each building on campus for heating air and water. Rather than bury these pipes underground where they would be much more susceptible to weathering and extremely difficult to maintain, tunnels are built to house the steam pipes. These tunnels, while not filled with steam themselves (as their name might suggest), can get very hot. Dangers include: - dehydration - asbestos - air quality - burning yourself on hot pipes - motion sensor - security cameras - door alarms Suggested equipment: - flashlight - water - gloves Gaining access: - Look around for steam vents. These generally look like manholes but are vented and probably are emitting some heat and the characteristic steam tunnel smell. The best time to look for steam tunnels is after a light snowfall. Shallow tunnels will heat the ground above and melt that snow much faster than the rest, leaving a tell-tale path. Follow these paths and look for the steam vents. - If vents prove futile, try gaining access through buildings. Since the steam tunnels provide heat to all the buildings, there is almost always steam tunnel access in the basement or sub-basement. When in a building, look for overhead steam pipes. Follow these pipes to their source to find access. - A third option is gaining access through a drain. The larger systems of steam tunnels often intersect with (and are accessible through) grates or doors from nearby drain systems.
