Oshawa Haunted House (Of Death)

When I heard that the City Of Oshawa had decided to re-zone the SE corner of Simcoe Street and Conlin Road from residential to commercial retail, I decided to take a looksie...

A row of about three or four homes were to be demolished to make way for a new retail area. Shopper's Drug Mart will be the anchor of this new strip mall, located right across the street from Durham College.

My next visit was a few months back. Already, most of the houses were demolished except for one.

I lost interest again then I overheard that the Durham Region Police were going to be at the sole remaining house today to practice blowing shit up. Yes, the police were going to be training some of their force to dynamite stuff and they chose to blow up this house before it gets officially demolished by the strip mall developer.

The first blast happened at around 11:00 am. It was freakin' loud! I mean, if I was at the nearby college or in one of the neighboring $500,000 homes I would have thought the sky was falling.

Several more blasts ocurred and as fast as Durham's finest arrived, they abruptly departed the scene. That's when I moved in for a closer look...

This last remaining house belonged to the Cameron family. Like the other houses on this site, they were all built in the late 40s and early 50s. The Cameron's lived there from the very start of the neighborhood, back when Simcoe Street was just a rugged narrow two-lane trail. Where Durham College now stands was a pasture with free roaming cows, who often wandered out onto Simcoe Street. The Cameron's had a son, who sadly died in a freak drowning incident in Lake Ontario. They took their buyout from the strip mall developer and have moved on to a new chapter of their lives elsewhere.

In this gallery you will see the old Cameron house along with the recent handywork of the Durham Police and their "blowing shit up" training session. You'll also see remnants from a simpler life, of tree-lined driveways with tire swings hanging from grand, proud, fifty-year-old plus trees. Just beyond there sat a giant barn, torn down decades ago.

The Cameron House

PS: Was it one of us visiting at the Danger! Keep Out! house today? I was going to go see if I could meet up with whomever they were but chickened out.
