Unipac, Aurora

Spent some time a couple weeks ago looking around Aurora here for any industrial abandonments. I noticed a nice 'FOR SALE' sign out front of the office building that Unipac used to use (was there a little over a year ago inside their building for a meeting so it's been a somewhat recent change).

The site itself does have one active building still, didn't check out the offices as any attempt to enter them would be easily visible. The lights are still on so it's likely the building is still maintained. The active building appears to be used for storage right now. Finally there is the main attraction, an old abandoned factory constructed decades ago in the 1950's. The building itself is a combination of factory/warehouse storage areas and offices. From the looks of things it was built originally as a factory/warehouse and had the office sections added in later years.

Some limited background info on Unipac that I gathered:

Founded in the 1950's Unipac is an Aurora-based manufacturing company that creates innerseals and closure liner products. In September of 1998 Illinois Tool Works Inc. (ITW) purchased Unipac. This looked to be the beginning of the end for this building. In December of 2001 ITW acquired Sonoco Capseals in Slough England. At around the same time Unipac shut down the operation of its factory in Aurora. Later sometime around 2006 the offices located here also shut down and the building was put up for sale. Only one building remains active at this site. Evidence in the factory appears to indicate the workers were dissatisfied with the loss of their jobs.

As the site is still active if you're going to chance a visit be wary. Avoid the tall building with the company name on the front of it, this is the active building. The area is fenced off with a single gate for vehicle access. If the gate is open, come back later as you won't be alone. I had to hide in the shadows twice to evade being caught. Watch out for exposed electrics in this place, also a couple of rooms on the ground floor had some interesting smells so a respirator is recommended. In one room it looks like one of the heaters is just venting its exhaust directly into the open air and not outside, didn't spend much time in there.

If you're in the area and want to check this place out on the weekend drop me a line. For more pictures of this site and to check out some of the other places I've been check out http://z0ng.org

hey guys! I used to work for this company and this location (they have another location just up industrial parkway in aurora)!!! I totaly didn't know it closed down!

The main building with the name on it was their office building, it's two floors and its where they used to do all their research and development - the company makes the seals you would find on the ketchup bottles etc. if you went in the front door, closest to the street, there was a door thatwent to the main floor offices and R&D lab. if you went up the stairs and threw another door you came to the upper floor where there is a kitchen, bathrooms, offices and an open space. the stairs at the back east corner were really the only way to get down to the main floor area where the lab was, more offices and an open area.

the other building to the south was the actual plant, where they made such seals and sent them out. there is an entrance again closest to the street that had a door to the main plant area, some offices, and stairs that went up stairs to their Quality Control room and a kitchen for the warehouse crew, and some bathrooms. the plant area is pretty much open for large machinery.

now the north building was mainly storage but they also did some manufacturing from this building too. as you can see this building is very old, like 100 years or more. its also rummored to be haunted by the local people and the nite crew that worked there. apparently it was a manufacturing place way back when for like very flammable products (i can't remember what exactly) and there had been a few explosions there and people were killed!

i've been in all three buildings, although less of the older one, which is the only one worth the exploration just because it's easily accessible and spooky lol!
