Speaking of maglights: I bought a new one and after one outing, the rubber switch cover went away. So I registered the light, and under comments I said "the switch cover fell off mystyriously after one outing" . Reply "your switch cover is in the mail, sorry for the trouble." Great service.
Speaking of rechargeables: My girlfriend was trying to get me to buy a Craftsmen rechargeable light. If anything like other Sears products it's top notch. I'll have to check that out. The mag rechargeable is 150 bucks Oh, they send you a flyer with your free part. "Maglight wear". Jacket: 98 bucks!

Well Haunted let me put it this way. An acquaintance of mine and five of his pals were given 27,000 rounds of 5.56 and 22,000 rounds of 9mm to fire off over two days. Every one of their M-4's had SureFire lights mounted on them, as well as several of their pistols and sub guns. After firing thousands of rounds through them, most of them on full auto, firing so much that they actually had cookoffs, they still operated fine. The constant rattling and vibrations and heat didn't have any adverse effect on them at all.

These sorts of testimonials are commonplace amongst users of SureFires. Check out the true stories section on their website. They wouldn't have the sort of top notch reputation they do amongst law enforcement and the military if they weren't the best things going. SureFires are simply in another stratosphere of flashlight technology. Most of their models are constructed from aerospace grade aluminum with a hard-anodized finish, and some are made from Nitrolon, a proprietary polymer compound.

Streamlight may not be as good as SureFire, but they are a step above MagLites.
The one thing I will concede about MagLites is that they are very solidly built. But the fact that you have to buy aftermarket accessories in order to bring them up to par with most other currently available flashlights, shows to me that MagLite is totally out of touch. I think they have believed their own hype for too long.

I've got a three D Mag mounted above my door, and a two AA that I usually always carry with me as a back up (or as a spare battery holder) There is far worse out there, but I know there is also much better out there.

In maglites defense, the thing that sets them apart from the other makers such as Surefire is that they occupy the niche of low cost, low technology, high quality and service. It's a rare thing to find a product that's manufactured in the United States and is built with such uniform quality that you don't have to pay out the arse for. I think mag-lite is quite happy with it's place in the flashlight market.

Would you care to put me in touch with these people who are giving away thousands of rounds of ammo?

Streamlight may be "innovative", but I'd say they're far from "excellent", at least by my standards. Pelican's far, far worse.

I just ordered a streamlight "Task-Light" flashlight (for 35 bucks), don't know if it is as durable as a maglite, but I do know that it is made the same way (knurled aluminum), is water resistant (rubber seals like the maglite), has an unbreakable lens like the maglites, and has a lifetime money back guaranty (I think maglites have a 10 year thing)... and its not the same flashlight you would've bought 20 years ago like Green man mentioned. With the flashlight I ordered that uses 2D's, I could get 80 hours of use in 5 LED mode, 50 in 10 LED (probably brighter than a maglite) or 9.5 hours of Xenon light (really bright)

… and whoever mentioned the crappy price for the rechargeable maglite, that flashlight doesn’t just have a rechargeable battery, it also has a 40,000 candlepower halogen bulb (I think I read somewhere Xenon bulbs are reffered to as halogens sometimes, so it could be one of them)

Sure.
Just troop on down to your local recruiting office. Tell them you want to enlist and tell them you want the 18X option. (ie a direct path into Army Special Forces). Or alternately you could request the 11x/Airborne/Option 40 (ie Rangers). Get a three year contract for your first enlistment and then re-up for SF.
No guarantee you'll be able to make it in though.
Said acquaintance sure has it tough. Complained that his thumb hurt from loading all that ordnance into magazines and that he got a callous on his trigger finger. Poor guy.
