Developed for military use in low light or no light situations. Since it's introduction it has evolved into many different forms. Consumer products however are still pricey and behind that of which is available to law enforcement and the military. However it can be a valuable tool when trying to with the ultimate stealth technique.

A camcorder that has an infrared "night shot" mode can be used for improvised night vision; such cameras have an illuminator built in. Note that the illuminator will be visible to others using night vision equipment.
