A type of memory card on which a digital camera records images. These cards come in a variety of sizes, from 16 megabytes to 1 gigabyte which can store over 10 000 pictures.

It is often a good idea to carry at least one back up card, not just in case you use up the available memory on your main card, but in the event that you are stopped and questioned by security or police who may ask to see your pictures and may demand that you erase them. Switching the card containing your pictures for a blank one, if you get the chance, will save your pictures and provide the police with less evidence of your trespassing.

These tend to come in various size:
32mb, 64mb, 128mb and 256mb

Each size offering a larger capacity of photos that are able to be stored.

Most CF-compatible cameras may also use the Hitachi Microdrive, a tiny hard drive available in 1, 2, and 4 GB sizes.

A CF card can be converted into a laptop PCMCIA card by using a dirt-cheap slide-in adapter.

Different cameras use different flash media formats. In addition to Compact Flash, there are several other types:

  • Memory Stick - Used in Sony products. 21.5x50x2.8mm.
  • SmartMedia - A thin card, 45x37x0.76mm in size, with contacts on one side.
  • MultiMediaCard - Even smaller, 32x24x1.4mm.
  • SD card - Many devices that use MMC can also use SD. These have a write protect switch, and also have DRM features to placate the music industry. 32x24x2.0mm.
  • miniSD card - A smaller version of SD. 21.5x20x2mm.
  • xD card - Yet Another Flash Media Format. 20x25x1.7mm.

Adapters are available to use xD cards in Compact Flash slots. This is only worthwhile if you have a CF-only camera and an xD-only camera, and want to use the same media in both.
