Radios come in all shapes and sizes... the little plastic FRS radios you can buy at radio shack are an example. The larger, more industrial radios that police and transit use are another example. Having the latter can be a great tool: It can keep you abreast of situations in your area (or if you've been spotted), and acts as a great credibility prop if you can social engineer decently. FRS radios are all but essential if exploring in a group. If you have to scatter, it's a great and inexpensive way to keep in touch.
