| | | Methane < on 1/29/2004 5:33 AM >
| | | A sewer gas found where there is decomposing household or industrial waste. Methane is commonly found in sanitary sewers, but can also be found in regular drains in rare cases from leaks or improper disposal. Methane tends to accumulate at the lowest point, but it can mix with all the surrounding air. Methane can often be detected by the smell of rotten eggs or simply the smell of sewage. Methane intereferes with the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood and can cause suffocation and death when inhaled in high concentrations. Exposure to low levels can cause nausea, headache, drowsiness, and tunnel vision. Methane is also a flammable gas and can explode if ignited by a spark, flame, or cigarette. If you believe a sewer or tunnel has a buildup of methane gas, avoiding it is generally the best idea. However, such a place could be explored with the help of a portable air supply or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Note: a rotten egg smell is likely to be a sign of Hydrogen Sulfide.
