A small narrow boat, usually holding only one or two people in a small cockpit at the center. A spray skirt can be placed around the user and connected to the cockpit edge to keep water out. Paddled with a two-bladed paddle in a rythmic motion, or with a single paddle canoe-style in small spaces. Their size and the ability to make the cockpit waterproof make these excellent for exploring flooded drains and tunnels.

Different varieties include:
Sea Kayaks: designed for long distance trips and rough weather.
River/stunt kayaks: Short and very maneuverable, somewhat unstable.
Sport Kayaks: shorter and wider than sea kayaks, good for beginners.
Folding kayaks: made from wood and waterproof rubber, portable.
Custom: wood/skin frame, native kayaks, homemade, etc. Many varieties.
