Static Rope

A rope-type with a low amount of elongation when loaded. Typical values range from 1% to 3%. This translates to a 1 to 3 foot increase in the length of the rope for every 100 feet of rope length. Static rope should only be used when top-roping. Static ropes are typically 9 mm or 11 mm, and CEN-approved ropes are required to be at least 80% one color to differentiate them from multi-colored dynamic ropes.

These ropes are often used by cavers/spelunkers/etc... because of their lack of elongation. These also include

Accessory Cord

Small diameter static rope ranging from 2mm to 7mm in diameter. Accessory cord is used for making prussik knots (for ascending ropes in self-rescue scenarios), gear slings, and other "accessory" applications. Accessory cord should never be used in place of a rope except in the most dire of circumstances.
